Transmission problem - 5R55E
Hi there - new user here.
Having some problems and thought this may be the place to turn to before spending a lot of $$.
2001 Explorer Sport (4l SOHC) with a 5 speed 5R55E transmission. Have been having an O/D flashing problem for a while, then this weekend lost drive. Pulled over and it was struggling to move. Now it doesn't seem to run in 'D', but will work okay in '2' and 'R'.
Took it to AAMCO and was told it needs to total rebuild as "the middle has gone bad" (am going to get more details when I pick it up). Was quoted $2900-3900 + tax for a repair. The car isn't even worth that much...
Any ideas if this sounds like the right diagnosis? I had read about a solenoid pack problem, but I don't know much about transmissions. Can't justify 3-4k for this car, but really need it to hold out another year before buying a newer car (recent grad).
Any info would be really, really, helpful. This forum looks really useful - hopefully it this can be fixed cheaper I'll use it more!
Thanks

When the OD light flashes it means a code was stored. At that point it may have been an inexpensive repair. Ignoring a transmission problem often leads to a complete trans failure. Once you lose drive you need a complete rebuild, or maybe a good used unit. A good independent repair shop could fix this for less.
