Break in MPG?

Break in MPG?
Read mileage thread and am curious where everyone is was on the very first tank of fuel. Picked up wifes new Plantinum last week 4X4 with 3.31's all hiway miles and 13 mpg. Kinda disappointed, is there anything to look forward to? Already thinking about aftermarker air intake and exhaust to see if it help economy.

Check out this thread of my road trip. I have an XLT with 3.31's and my break in mileage was very good. As I understand from previous posts, Ford says a typical break in period for the ecoboost is 3000-10,000 miles. I have just over 3500 miles on her now.
I'd push the MPG reset button on the steering wheel and see what happens after that.

My 3.5 Ecoboost Screw with Max Tow (3.73 rear end) is not quite a week old yet - has 350 total miles and I reset the mpg when I drove it off the dealer lot. I live about 10 miles outside of town - and after 6 days of mixed back-and-forth to town plus "in town" driving the display says 17.8 mpg (no towing yet).
I'm hoping for better - we'll see.

I have a 2011 XLT extended cab with max tow, 3.73 rear end, 18 inch wheels with just under 1900 miles. I started tracking the mpg following the first oil change around 700 miles. I track actual mpg based on fill up gallons at the pump as well as what the fuel economy display (FED) was telling me:
1: 367 miles of 1/3 flat Hiway 2/3 town; 17.65 actual, 17.8 FED
2: 101 miles of around town; 15.68 actual, 15.6 FED
3: 327 miles of flat and hilly HiWay; 18.86 actual, 19.3 FED
4: 92 miles of around town; 15.65 actual, 15.3 FED
5: 331 miles of flat & hilly highway; 18.67 actual, 19.2 FED
The highway miles are NYS Thruway (flat) and rts 81 and 17 which are mostly gradual hills. Not the highway the epa tests for. More real world. I maintain speed limits in the 65-70 range. On an 60 mile stretch of Thruway the display read 21mpg which tells me I was easily getting 20mpg. Around town is mostly country towns not city stop and go. Maintain the speed limits. These numbers are not towing and the truck is lightly loaded. I don't have a heavy foot and am conscious of fuel economy. I also don't let this truck idle if I get out of it. I turn it off because it does effect the outcome. I plan to track this up through 10000 miles or beyond.

I just filled up for the first time yesterday. 4x2 Screw XLT, 3.15 axle. Mileage on the first tank was 16.9 mpg, almost exclusively city/commute driving which includes five miles of highway to work. The first trip after fill-up was 120 miles of combined highway/city/mountain and the trip computer reported 20.0 mpg. It seems to be providing advertised mileage.

I was getting 14.5 MPG until I hit 500 miles....when it was like someone had flipped a switch. Mileage then jumped to 18 and now at just over 5000 miles, my daily driving average is always 19 or better. The Ecoboost seems to need some break in mileage for increased MPG, though the break in period seems to be all over the place.....perhaps due to differences in region, terrain and operator driving styles.

Just returned from a 2500 mile roundtrip with my 2011 Ecoboost SCREW with max tow (empty) and 3.73. Truck now has ~4500 miles on it. On outbound leg was going to try and be pretty careful how I drove it to try and maximize the mpg. But after about 250 mi I decided heck with it - drive it like I'd normally drive it on Interstate. So for outbound 1200 miles I got 17.3 mpg - up and down hills hanging around 74 - 78 mph for 18 straight hours.
On return leg - different interstate - still around 74 - 78 mph this time with air on for about 'half of the 18 hours got 18.2 mpg. Overall combined for 17.8.
Not what I was hoping for - right or wrong !

Mine is actually worse, driving around town, all flat area, and NOT getting on it what so ever, about 9.5-10.5. Have about 900 miles on truck with a 5 hour trip coming this week. If not better, heading to dealer...

A couple new data points, and some observations. As noted earlier, this is a 4x2 screw, 3.15, now with a tanneau cover. I am generally easy on the boost, but enjoy using as needed.
First 1000 miles, general purpose commute use, combined city/highway/hills, trip computer registered 18.4 mpg overall right to the 1K mark.
I just got back from a 714 mile round trip, mostly coastal highway, some hills and small mountain passes, typical speeds upper 60s - low 70s, one passenger and a couple hundred pounds of cargo. Trip computer showed 32.5 gallons used, 22.1 mpg total. Pump fills (no top-offs) show 34.0 gallons, 21.0 mpg. Interesting that the computer vs. pump differ by 1.5 gallons, or about 5%. That seems like a lot.
Cruising on a number of long flat stretches with no wind, I paid attention to computer registered mpg at two different cruise-control speeds. At 68 mph (~1600 rpm), the 10-minute average generally flatlined at 24-26 mpg. At 72 mph (1800 rpm), the 10-minute average consistently ran 21-22 mpg. Given the discrepancy in computer vs. pump usage numbers, I'm skeptical about the specific numbers, but the mileage definitely varied significantly at just a few mph differences, time and again.
All in all, though, I still get sticker-rated or better mileage, which is all I was hoping for as a relatively light-duty user.

Well made my 5 hour trip from Michgian to the Chicago last week, now have about 1700 miles on truck so far. Best mileage I got was 18 going 55 MPH approaching downtown Chicago. I have the 3:31 gear by the wa...
I did everything possible to try and get more, but just couldn't. Going there at 70 MPH...barely keeping up with traffic I could get nothing more than 17 and some change.
I'm heading from the Detroit area to Grand Rapids MI today, about a 3 hour trip, I'll be on my best behavior again, staying off the boost and see if I can get to the almighty 20+ as printed on window sticker.

Looks like I'm one of the unlucky ones. I have 1600 miles so far on a FX4 SuperCrew Eco with 3.73s and the tires are 20s. Each week I drive a flat stretch that is 120 miles each way. At 70 mph I see 15.1-15.8. The city driving while I'm in town for the week gets me around 12-14.
I set the trip B when I took it home from the dealer. The overall average is 14.7 over the 1600 miles. I would have to say it is about 70/30 highway/city driving.
I have had it for three weeks and have already had it stall twice with no explanation and no CEL.
Seems to be luck of the draw... Huge fan of the truck, not such a huge fan of the Eco. Live and learn.
