hey new here with a ? i got 61 unibody with a 223. i put a timing chain and gears in it. the way i thought they went. tried to start it up and the eng was locked up. anyway after 2 days i figured out if the ..keyway.. for the cam gear is in roughly the 12 o clock positon the crank will not turn over?? any where else you put the cam key.say 3or 6or 8 oclock the crank turns fine .. and this is without the chain on it .. iam turning the crank with a ratchet. took off starter and distrubtor. to make sure it wasnt the problem .. anyway i've heard of //interference// motors in newer cars . is a 223 setup like that?? thanks

 

I don't have a picture handy, but the marks on the timing set for the 223 (and Y-Block V8s) aren't supposed to line up when you install them. They are supposed to be offset by a certain number of links in the chain. You really need the picture from the service manual.

I can help you with this, I just rebuilt my 62 223. Position the crank gear mark at the 2 o'clock position then do the same to the cam gear, this is with the chain off. remove the cam gear, install chain, reinstall gear and chain and make sure there are twelve chain pins between the timing marks. You may have to move the cam a little to get exactly twelve pins. This is straight out of the service manual except I'm subing 2 o'clock for the pic in the manual. Hope this helps. Let's hope you don't need a lot of parts because camshaft, lifters, oil tubes are hard to find or very pricey. Also on the 223 the marks will definitely be facing away from the oil filter.

 

thanks for the info, i finally got it put back together and running . because of this site and tips other wise i don't know if i would have ever figured it out .. i assumed that the marks just lined up ..WRONG.. why even put em on there ? the old chain appears to be factory it has ford stamped on the links.. the new chain/gears is a cloyes .i read somewhere the chains were marked i didn't see any on ethier of these. the gears were marked the same ford/cloyes... i just can't help but wonder how they timed these on the assembly line?? i know the guy didn't have time to count links' line up #1 on dist. etc. etc. anyway thanks again
