I hear a lot about the .45-70 (.45govt) for big takedown but I'm not an expert. I can't imagine what a big .45 round would do though...
My son just got an old 8mm Mauser, it's a early Ww2 Czech model with a 30" barrel (it's long but might be 26"). I think the muzzle velocity on this thing is pretty significant from what I hear. Might be good too? The old ones are cheap but you are limited to iron sights.

I noticed a Mauser on the bench next to your son. Is that the one you are talking about? That straight bolt is a dead give away. It's amazing how smooth those actions are.

Yea Lee, my son really likes vintage type guns. He wants a 7mm Mauser, a Steyr, and of course a **** 98K, among others. Most of the Mauser and steyrs sell for less than $400 on gunbroker so we are always trying to bid on them but I usually cut off around $200. Decent rifles can sell for less than $200 if we catch them right.
I think it's great that he tries to learn about the different bolt systems and wants examples of them for himself. They're fun to shoot (at our nice range, state provides some really nice places to shoot) and see how they work, it is cool how smooth they are.

Great pic Joel.
Agree that the 45-70 will take down anything within it's range. It's a great bear gun. I have a Marlin 1895 GS in 45-70. It's a cool gun and I like it but it's pretty hard on the shoulder (I like to shoot a lot) and I don't shoot it all that well because I flinch with it a bit. I can still hit an 10" gong at 100 yards but anyway .....
Dak, you could get a Browning BLR in a very wide range of chamberings. Might be a little more versatile for moose out a bit farther. Something like 30-06 or even 7mm rem mag (still a pretty good kicker). A friend of mine is left handed so he likes the BLR's. He had one in 7mm RM, 243 win and 308. I have shot them all, they are nice guns. Just my $0.02
Current Production
No sign of John yet??

Joel, it's great that your son is in to that kind of thing. Not just the old guns, but also what makes them work. You might be raising the next John Browning.
