1981 F100s with the AOD all had tubular TV rods that look very similar to the C4&C6
kickdown rods but perform a much different function. As said before, if it is an AOD
get someone knowledgeable about AODs to help get the TV hookup right.
If you fail to hook it up and adjust it correctly you will destroy the AOD in short order.

Matt - Here's what the '81 FSM says about auto transmissions in general, including the AOD, with regard to your symptom:
No drive, slips or chatters in reverse - forward OK:
And, here's what it says about adjusting the TV Control Linkage, with the bolding from Ford:
No drive, slips or chatters in reverse - forward OK:
- Improper fluid level
- Damaged or improperly adjusted linkage
- Looseness in the driveshaft, u-joints or engine mounts
- Reverse bands out of adjustment or damaged reverse clutches
- Improper oil pressure control
- Damaged or worn reverse clutch or servo
- Valve body loose
- Dirty or sticking valve body
And, here's what it says about adjusting the TV Control Linkage, with the bolding from Ford:
- Check that the engine idle speed is set at specifications.
- De-cam the fast idle cam on the carb so that the throttle lever is at its idle stop. Place shift lever in N (Neutral), set park brake. (Engine off.)
- Backout (CCW) linkage lever adjusting screw all the way (screw end flush with lever face)
- Turn in (CW) linkage lever adjusting screw until a thin shim (.005 max) or a piece of writing paper fits snug between end of screw and Throttle Lever. To eliminate effect of friction, push Lindage Lever forward (tending to close gap) and release before checking clearance between end of screw and Throttle Lever. Do not apply any load on levers with tools or hands while checking gap.
- Turn in (CW) adjusting screw an additional four turns. (Four turns are preferred. Two turns minimum is permissible if screw travel is limited.)
- If it is not possible to turn in adjusting screw at least two additional turns or if there was insufficient screw adjusting capacity to obtain an initial gap in Step 2 above, refer to Linkage Adjustment at Transmission.

Vacuum Diagram
This may be stupid. But the vacuum diagram should be right on the top where the hood latch is. Is it gone? I have an 1981 Ford F-100 302 3 speed with OD and I can take a picture of my vacuum diagram and post it?
Then why do you need the vacuum diagram? You need vacuum into the cab for the HVAC controls, vacuum to the tranny if it is an auto, vacuum for the power brake booster, vacuum for the cruise control if you have one, and ported vacuum to the distributor.
The first 4 should come from a vacuum tree at the back of the intake manifold, and the ported vacuum is probably on the passenger's side of the primary metering plate on the carb, up high.
