So i have a 97 exp. that i have had since 99. it turned on the engine light because of a failed overdrive band. my trany guy worked some magic and told me that its fixed for the short term but will not last. a rebuild is $1500 but it got me wondering if i could just drive it to and from work with the OD shut off. i'm sure i could and if it needs a rebuild anyway i probably wont do any more damage, but if its gonna get traded off its gotta be soon. any thoughts? i also have a big enough heart that i really dont want to shaft someone else with the bad trans. i dont know what to do next. its also seems like a one year only trans so i cant find one in a u-pull-it yard.

 

If you have the 4.0 SOHC with the 5 Speed auto, if you loose OD, you will also loose 2nd gear. Do you know the exact code that was thrown?

 

the code was p1762-overdrive band failure. it has the 4 liter single cam engine. i am pretty sure its a four speed, or three speed with OD. whichever. it has only acted up on the interstate when it wont shift into OD. my daughter drives it now but i dont think it has ever lost 2nd gear.

 

just thought i would give an update. picked up the exp. and my trans. guy told me the od band is junk. he tightened it as much as he dared and turned up the pressure in the trans. i asked what would happen if i just drove it with the od turned off and he said that would be the way to go. it has now become my daily driver and i have been going back and forth to work with the od off, 60mph turning 3000 rpm. we will see how long i can get away with this. on a side note, the 97 exp has a trade in value of 1750 with a good trans. the trans rebuild will be 1500.
