302 and 351W parts interchange ??

Looking for a list of what parts (internal & external) that will interchange between a 79 302 truck engine and a 351W.

I have a 79 F100 with a 302 & aluminum heads that is low on power and smoking. Looking to upgrade in torque and horsepower such as a stroker 408 long block.

What parts interchange?

The list of interchangeable parts is short, cylinder heads, camshaft, timing cover and water pump, and in this case the flexplate or flywheel.

Motor mounts?
Transmissions?
Accessory drive brackets?
Distributors?

Cylinder heads are the same, but the intake manifolds are not? That must mean that the deck heights are different, right?

I'm trying to decide between a stroker 302, 351W, & stroked 351W.

I don't want to spend a ton of money on this project because I'm still throwing a lot at my 78.... it will never end! :-)

It has a C6 now, also thinking about swapping in a AOD or maybe a $Gearvendor OD$.
Need an Overdrive either way.

Yep deck heights are different. Both motors have the same trans bolt patterns and use the same engine mounts too but only the EFI accessory brackets interchange. Distributors are not interchangeable either.

A 351 gives you the displacement of a 302 stroker without having to buy those parts so it's a no brainer IMO given what a good condition shortblock costs compared to a stroker kit.

An AOD needs upgrades and a shift kit to be reliable behind a 5.8 but it's a good combo that can deliver outstanding highway milage.. I had that combo in my '90 for a while and loved the power and high teens highway milage.

The stroker crank is usually lighter, mains are smaller. If economy is an issue a 347 should get better mileage, all other things equal. The 351 would be a little more durable.

You need to sit down and do the math before commiting to an OD. You can buy a lot of gas for what these conversions cost (specially the gear vendors OD) The AOD would be the cheapest route, IF you can find a serviceable transmission that needs no rebuilding. You need to figure in the cost of the transmission and rebuilding it as opposed to just keeping the C6. You can also effectively change the final drive ratio to about what the OD gear will get you though changing the "chunk" in the 9" rear or going to taller rear tires. What tires are there now and what's the ratio in your rear ? How much do you drive it ? And where do you primarily drive it ? (in town or highway?)

scrap yard jewel

Hi I do not know if fuel economy is a major concern for you.
But if you want pulling power for cheap look at scrap yards and you can have a 460 fuel injected with all the wires, computer and all for very cheap (nobody wants them) people are affraid of big block for their consumption but beware pick a 1993 and up 460s saw an improved cylinder head design that further improved power and economy.

Just drop it in and your done your C6 will fit right on.

Good luck...let me know...but for sure you should at the very least investigate in your surrounding to see how cheap you can get one.

Umm, no it will not. The 460 used a different bell pattern, C6's do not have bellhousings that are removeable. You have to have a big block C6 to use behind a 460.

Just keep in mind these reference books are chock full of mistakes. They are handy, just do not think everything in them is 100% accurate.
