Unbelieveable luck w/ cracked manifold

So I had an annoying exhaust leak that I was on the verge of digging into myself when I decided to bite the bullet and let the dealer handle it (my garage is full of motorcycles and a Jeep that all need wrenching). I took my truck to Tuttle-Click Ford here locally and left it with them to diagnose. My truck is an 06 and well out of warranty even though I only have 55k miles on it.

Anyway, the tech calls me up and says the manifold is cracked and will cost $800 to replace. While I was not too shocked by that quote, he went on to say that they were going to do it for free because the manifold is covered by an "extended emissions warranty". I was stunned. Apparently, so parts are covered by un-stated warranties based on projected life-spans (or something like that - I didn't quite understand his explanation). Either way, I'm getting it done for free. And to think I was going to buy a manifold myself and tear into it!

I never get this lucky! Just wanted to share.

Turns out both manifolds were cracked. Got the truck back today and it seems to have a lot more pep. It's also nice to hear my Magnaflow now! All for free-fifty-freeeeee!

Just located my exhaust leak today. You guessed it passenger side exhaust manifold. I have an 05 screw fx4 5.4 called the dealership today inquiring about the warranty possibility and they said it had a mileage limit. I believe he sad 80k was the cut off. I'm well over that at 170k so no luck for me I guess.
Thinking about putting on some headers since I'm going to have to do some work. Does anyone have any suggestions?
What brand? Long or short? Size?

I was looking up info on stainless steels used in exhaust systems and I read that the Fed. gov't wants to mandate manufacturers to use stainless.
I guess they don't want anyone or anything to interfere with pollution control gizmos like catalytic converters or manifolds.

It pays to check out a warranty for emissions, TSB's and rust. Good Job!

Just a quick question concerning this topic, is there a TSB that lists the manifolds being covered under the extended warranty? I dropped my 08 F150 5.4L 49,900 miles, off this morning at the dealership. I hear a leak on the passenger side when it is cold, and it quiets down, but does not go away when warm. They decided to keep it until it cools to see if they can find the leak. When I asked about the "extended emissions warranty" the service writer just gave a blank stare. I asked him not to do any work on the truck, without talking to me first. I would like to present him with the information about this. Thought that maybe someone knows the TSB number?
Thanks, Jeff Newman

If I had to guess, you live in California. The manufacturers have to stand behind and repair any emissions related issue for 7-70 and if your car is a P-zev it is 15 years

Ford Racing has a stainless shorty header for the 5.4L F150's. The price seems reasonable. J Bittle American also makes a stainless shorty for F150's with 5.4L's. They are around $500. I'm sure Banks, Gibson, and the other aftermarket exhaust companies have something as well. If I have a manifold crack, I'll be looking into a set of shorties from Ford Racing.

Update on my cracked manifold. The Service Writer came to me while waiting and said that they could not find the leak. I mentioned that it was more pronounced when cold then when hot. He asked if they could keep the truck for a few hours. I agreed. The service writer called that afternoon and said that yes, the passenger side manifold was cracked. He also mentioned that the mechanic working on the truck knew of the extended emissions warranty, and that the replacement manifold and labor are covered by this. He did mention that it was normally about an $800 USD job. I thanked him, and just waiting for them to call and say it is done. Jeff Newman
