Had truck in Dealer today and asked tech. about cap! He stated Ford has told them if these caps pop off once they are no longer any good and have to be replaced.

I think by pops off he means overheats or has too much pressure?

"Pops off" means the spring loaded valve in the cap opens and releases pressure. It sounds absolutely correct, and follows the same basic information for fire extinguishers, T&P valves on water heaters, etc. In all cases the valves spend 99.999% of the time closed and the sealing surfaces "set", they usually don't seal properly after they open and frequently the venting deposits some debris on the sealing surface further ensuring they don't seal again.

I read a lot about people checking the brand new caps when purchasing them at the store, and finding them bad. Is this for real that their quality control can, and does actually SUCK that much? Or are there faulty "tests" on them? I find it a little far-fetched that there is that high of a failure rate "New in the box". Stant is probably the largest manufacturer of caps. And, I would have to believe that they probably make a lot of OEM caps, and that they would most likely have the best manufacturing test/quality control equipment for production.

I replaced my cap even though the original was clean. Never hurts to have a new one on there.

Fireemt978, I'm with you, I doubt that the quality control is that bad. I did keep my orignial cap just in case though.

Going down the road today as I was pulling a trailer I noticed a ton of steam coming off the engine, thought it was smoke at first, I was thinking man this don't look good. The cap blew off and spilled everything on the engine. Worth five bucks to not have this happen.

thats basically what happened to me.. i was pulling a trailer up a hill and was boosting pretty high.. egts were getting up there.. and i looked out the driver side mirror.. and sure enough, i saw huge cloud of white steam coming out the back of my truck.. happened 2 or 3 other times also... replaced the cap a few weeks later after seeing this video.. problem solved.
