89 F-250 XLT Lariat wont stay started.

Stalled out last night while I was driving and I fanned the gas pedal which didnt seem to help but it did let me make it about 3/4 of a mile further before I broke down completely. Now it will not start unless you turn the key forward without starting it 5-6 times, but it will not stay running at all. I have had the tank closest to the cab (tank 1) not work for about 6 months, So the switch is always on 2. Replaced the Fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure relay today and it didn't help. What could be happening?? Its a V8 Fuel injected 302 engine with dual tanks. I Have no idea what to try next.....

If you need to turn the key on and off 5-6 times before it will start, the fuel pump could be bad. My guess is that the repeated cycling of the key is priming the fuel lines just enough to get it started, but the pump is unable to maintain pressure and so it dies.

When is the last time you replaced the fuel filter? It could be clogged to the point that it's not letting enough fuel pass through it.

If you have a fuel pressure tester, use it.

Thanks we are getting filter and replacing it in the morning. With the pump kicking on when you turn the key (does that matter)

pump should kick on when your turn the key. with the key on, there will always be power running to the pump, pressurizing the system. IF the pump is going bad, it may still run but it wont be putting out enough pressure... or the pickup trap maybe clogged. if changing the filter doesn't help. get a pressure gauge on there and watch, if it drops off after the engine ran for a second then its a bad pump
