K&N Air filter worth the investment?

My 5.0L has been almost 1yr on the road and thinking of changing the air filter...never owned a cleanable & reusable one. $54 for a K&N at JC Whitney, and the aftermarket paper ones range from $7-$12.00 on EBAY.

So i can get 7 paper ones for 7 years of use for about the same price as a K&N, and after that I will probably get a new vehicle...so is there some other advantage to these? I read the K&N FAQs and don't see much if any price benefit. Am I missing something?

Years ago, I had a K&N filter on my '91 5.0L Mustang. I'm not sure I would want to have another one, though, since it takes time to properly maintain them. If I had other reasons to improve the "breatheability" of my intake system, such as forced induction, then I may consider it. But, for a daily driver, I think I'll just stick to paper filters. I don't have extra time to devote to the cleaning process. Also, the K&N may be re-usable, but you still have the "maintenance cost" of the K&N Filter Oil and Cleaning Solution.

They're a pain to clean, over-oiling can lead to MAF fouling and other fun, and they've been shown to allow larger particles of dirt through (and that's if you oil them properly). And they're a mess to clean.

I run Motorcraft or Wix paper filters and they function just fine...

If you want to get a "cold air kit" i would go with a voolant. I had one on my 2005 and loved it. I would have one on my truck now but havent came up with the money to buy it.

Yeah - just stick with the MC paper filter. Per the maintenance guide I only have to replace mine every 30K miles.

Is the 5.0L different?

Unless you are running forced induction, you won't benefit performance wise from a K&N on these new trucks (or a so called cold air kit for that matter...) and even then you are risking destroyed impeller blades from the increased dirt allowed into the intake. And if not oiled properly, you will gum up your MAF sensor, causing poor performance and mileage. I like the cold air and K&N filter on older vehicles with natural aspiration, but not on my newer vehicles.

I have 185000 miles on my 2002 f250 with the V10 and have had the same K&N airfilter on it without any MAF issues. It is the original. It is always clean. Yes there is maint. on it but it really isn't too bad. They are correct about over oiling it. Don't do it. If you follow the directions it is pretty easy to right.

Chris - consider yourself lucky.

Here is a test on Bob is the Oil Guy: Air Filtration Test K&N fails to even get close to it's marketing hype.

And here's diesel testing: http://www.dieselbombers.com/chevrol...r-testing.html Once again, K&N is a total failure at filtration.

Wow, I am a information junkie and hadn't found that before. Good read. Maybe I was lucky. Here I thought I was getting better mileage and all that related to the filter. It must be my driving habits.

Save your money. The gains aren't there, especially in the rpm range we normally use our trucks.

Someone a few posts earlier mentioned the Volant unit. They are now making units with the Donaldson PowerCore element that is the same type as used from the factory in the Powerstroke Diesels since about '03. A VERY good filter with very little restriction. If you're looking into aftermarket units you could do a lot worse than that unit.

The Donaldson filters are pretty impressive... and the amount of dirt they can hold is incredible. Something like 2lbs. of dirt before they are restrictive enough to trip the filter minder. Unfortunately, they aren't cheap... but it would mean substantially less time under the hood.

Donaldson filters are about the best on the market. They are used in the M1-A1 Abrams tanks. We also use them on our compressor packages. Not cheap, but top shelf all the way. Put a K&N on my 05 PSD F250 6.0L. I had it on the truck for exactly 1200 miles (1 trip) and it came off. I never used it again. I went back to the stock Donaldson.
