well at the end of last summer i had a fire in the cab caused by some badly wired gauges, and i thought i had the problem fixed but today i just wanted to run it to make sure everything is good
well the wire that comes off the battery side of the starting solenoid i think its originally black/orange or black/yellow its really dirty but i took a wire off of the solenoid and ran it into the black/yellow and the wire i ran heated up and started melting the insulation
i am at a loss for what to look for any suggestions?
The two Black/Orange wires coming from the alternator should splice into a fusible link before getting to the solenoid.
I don't know what you have in your truck.
Play it safe, and if you can't find a spare slot in your fuse panel, get an inline fuseholder and tap in after the ignition switch.
Definitely find the short in your gauges before trying to hook them back up.
alright i have a 302 in it, i will definitely get a fusable link tomorow
im not really going to worry about the gauges for a while, and im going to get different ones anyway, the PO did some damage on the electricial in this truck lol
one final question, where do i find a fusable link that can hold up to the high amperage? it seems like no local auto parts stores know what im talking about...
My 2G had just a regular (green) 14Ga fusible link that should be available at any parts store,
65A is the full output of a 2G alternator, I'm not sure about the 1G in your 1980.
I think they should be rated by gauge and coded by color.
12Ga (red), 14 (green) and 16 (brown)
