Hey guys, I'm working on my newer Dana 60 and had a question about the brake line tee.
There was a hose on the top. I assume it's just a vent, but why the hose? Anything in particular I should replace it with?

You are correct Joe, It’s a vent for the axle to prevent pressure build up. The hose was to move the vent higher in the event you went into deep water.

Oh, that makes sense. I doubt I will be doing much deep water driving. I will find a shorter replacement for it.

Be sure to add a vent cap on the end of the hose or get an axle vent without a hose. As the axle cools down it will suck trash back down into the axle without the vent cap. You can probably get the whole set up at a salvage yard for cheap.

I'm headed to Rosebud tomorrow.(A little spot in the road between me and St. Louis) I sold a 54 grill and radiator bracket and we are meeting there to transfer. The guy says he has a 55 with a 53 grill and likes the 54 grill better. More power to him.
I've been working a little bit on my Dana 60. Getting the shoes on is driving me nuts. That stupid spring just won't hook up to the holder for me on the fourth shoe.(The red one) I know I'm a scrawny guy, but dang!
Also, did I miss anything? I didn't add the emergency brake lever since I won't be using it. I'm such a novice at this stuff, I guess that's why it takes me forever to get anything done.
The springs on the ground are extras from the kit I bought. I got a bit worried until I went to my box of old stuff and counted springs.

Ask him what he wants for his other grill. I. Forgot you had the 54 grill.

Yep, sure do.
Also, I think I have it all on backwards. I've read where the big shoe goes on the back, but all the hardware indicates the self adjuster should be on the front.
I wonder how much it matters. I guess I need the practice and can pull all of this off and put it back on the other way.

Couldn’t tell by the picture what side it was but the bigger shoe (more brake lining) goes to the back. Reverse them and your braking gets a little squirrelly. In your case the self adjuster won’t matter as much because you’re not using the backing plate mounted parking brake. If you were the application of the parking brake helps to adjust the shoes.

Let me know when you start working on your e-brake, I have some questions about mine.

for the adjusters- one side is reverse thread so it’s possible that your self adjusters could losen the shoes when you want them to tighten. Just something to think about.

I did the e-brake quite a while ago.
Here is a bit of it from this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...&postcount=362
Here is another good thread on lining material: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...t-e-brake.html

let me know what questions you have and I will try to dig up some answers and pictures.
Good point on the adjusters, I will double check those.
I was wondering about the self adjusters if I don't have the ebrake. Are they worth having in there or should I just get them out of the way. If I want to adjust by hand, they make it more difficult.

I lost my sister yesterday. Bev was a miracle child. She lived 50+ years longer than the doctors at Mayo said she would. She was surrounded by family when she passed. She is now free from the burdens of her body.

im in Bolivar this week preparing for the funeral.

Joe, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. You have my sympathy at this difficult time of parting. As you well know, your sister has gone to a far better place to be with her Lord. We have God's promise that her absence will only be for a short time, and we believe that you can confidently look forward to a reunion with her in heaven.

I'm so sorry Joe! But it sounds like your family had more years to love her than the doctors thought possible. Now she is whole.
