One of the main reasons for racing is research & development of automotive technology.

To have fun. If you're the first one across the stripe, so much the better.

Wallet cleaning... or in the case of ricers, to demonstrate supposed superiority over the common people.

Racing (motorsports) is for people that think running sucks.

Not a running fan here but I do like running of engines hauling *** around a race track. Thats where you will find me come race day with a cold brew and awesome snacks.

"What is the Purpose of RACING?"

from a NASCAR perspective it's purpose is primarily filler between commercials.

If NASCAR went to a figure 8 track configuration they could charge twice as much for commercial time. Hell...I'd even watch it!

Admit it! You're a fan of the Thunderbird roller skating team!!!

*FAST Chica's - BAAAAD tempers...*

A LOT of racing is also a social and "Being a Part Of" thing, then there is also shear competitiveness. Wherein each race is a coup of another sort...

There is the "Being There" and bragging rights, shop talk and SMACK talk, the sights, the smells, the sound and the FEEL of it all...

Thunder is addictive

When I was a kid - I wanted a bike.

When I had a bike - it needed an engine...

There I see through the spyglass of time the roots of some of my deepest emotional turmoil...

Funny you brought this up, Dutch...looks like we're losing our local track. Again.

Irwindale Speedway appears to be closing - LA Daily News

So I guess I have to amend my original answer to say "the point is to have fun while you can".

My thoughts exactly - if you think back to my final commitment to build a bad Ranger, it was centered around the idea: "NOW! Before it's too late..."

*I still lack a decent solution to my trans mount troubles. I can cut the cross member, or try the mount from the original four-popper tranny (a "T-K") and see if it bolts to the AOD I have for it.
