Cavitation. Block Worm. The Expensive Death. A MUST READ! - Oilburners.net

Here is a really good read on cavitation. I am not going to lie having three 7.3l used trucks I am a little worried.

its a good one!
i have a link to that in my sig below too, called "Maintaining Coolant For The IDI".

as for fearing cavitation.don't.it's fairly rare, even though it's talked about very often.
as long as you maintain the coolant, the 7.3l will hold up.
the first gen,and even some early second gen PSD 7.3l's need to run traditional coolant with sca's too.
after that, they went to ELC coolant of course which combats cyl wall erosion differently.
see "Adding a Coolant Filter to the IDI Cooling System" to learn how to have an advanced coolant filter keep care of this for you.
6.9l guys tend to think they are exempt! that's the most dangerous problem imho, because the walls are still attacked.they can,and have been known to fail due to cavitation too! perhaps less worse,a 6.9l block may be doomed from being rebuilt because cly wall's are have been eaten too close for comfort.since they are the preferred block to start with for rebuilding an idi, that would be a shame.

........
lets go pats!!!!

I am running a non-silicate coolant, it said to mix it so I used distilled water. How does that compare, or is it more like the extended life coolants and I don't need to worry about it?

I bought mine with almost 200k on the clock, the P.O was also a diesel mechanic and had been checking and treating the coolant. When i replaced the thermostat I flushed and refilled with FinalCharge ELC.

I run DCA4 in all my IDI's, 6.9 or 7.3 no difference for me. It's cheap insurance.

That link doesn't work right, I'll have to come back later.

ATLAS Perma-Guard® Universal Antifreeze/Coolant is an ethylene glycol formulation that meets requirements for aluminum engines in automobiles, while meeting the low silicate requirements of diesel engines. It is recommended when changing your vehicles coolant to fully drain the system, and re-fill with a 50/50 mix of Atlas Perma-Guard® Universal Antifreeze. This will insure your vehicles freezing protection of -34°F, which is the recommended temperature of most major vehicle manufacturers. Always check your vehicle owner's manual for exact requirements.

HEAVY DUTY FORMULA:

ATLAS Perma-Guard® Universal Antifreeze/Coolant Precharged with Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA) meets the heavy duty requirements: ASTM D3306, D4985, and TMC RP329.

Team TBA

sounds good.

one of the more commonly used is fleet charge, which is found at stores like tractor supply and napa.
