I have a 2004 f 350 6.0 diesel just got it this past summer and last night on my drive home i stopped at a light and the truck had a rough idle but when the light changed i stepped on the pedal and it was fine the next light i stopped and the bad idle was back but only when rpms are low it kinds feels like its chugging but once i give it gas its fine can anyone help (no check engine light on at all)
Get your truck code scanned first. Not having a CEL doesn't mean it doesn't have stored codes. Also, your 2004, depending on production date, could have a 2003 or 2004 motor.
How about some specifics on your truck? Mileage, filter and oil brands used, oil change interval, last fuel and oil filter change, etc.
I agree with Tim start out by getting it code scanned most autoparts stores will do for free plus its easy enough to do, And more info on the history of the truck
Then start thinking about getting a ScanGaugeII it will show you alot about your 6.0 www.scangauge.com or at AutoZone
Due to the description of the Issue Im leaning towards a HPO issue you need to look at ICP and IPR% specificaly you can do this with the SGII I could be wrong but we will let the numbers decide
you can also go thru this checklist and post your results
sorry guys its got about 134000 miles motorcraft oil and fuel filters changed about a month ago and im running royal purple 15 - 40 and the only upgrade i have done is the banks monster Exhaust i drove it today for about 15 miles and about 3/4 of the way to where i was going it started to smoke not blinding but really could see it the smoke was a grey color It did not smoke at all before today also i scanned it today after i saw all the smoke and no codes i even did it twice to make sure
Since you might be pulling the EGR valve, park nose down tonight if you can, then pull EGR in the morning, unless it is already nose down. Check for moisture/wetness in the EGR valve hole.
If wet, your EGR cooler is failing. If it's puddled in there, it's toast.
