E250 transmission help

2000 e250 ford van, 5.8L, transmission started acting up, start the engine, put in gear, pulls fine for about 5 minutes then its like its in neutral turn off the engine set for a few minutes start it back up and it pulls fine for another 5 minutes. It started doing this after pulling a long steep grade, temp hand went out of sight and tranny went into limp mode. turn the engine off set for about 1 minute started the engine put in gear and run fine with all gauges at normal readings, seems like a computer issue. It would work fine for a few days then start acting up again. turn engine off and start back up tranny worked good but now its doing this every few minutes, any ideas of what the problem might be, Ive changed filter and oil, new speed sensor, as i stated earlier seems like computer problem since this initially started after pulling steep grade and turned engine off and started it again everything was normal again

The computer cannot shift the transmission to neutral.

A common problem is that the bolts the pass pressure from the valve body to the center support, called the feed bolts, can loosen and leak pressure that should be holding the clutches. You can access these bolts by dropping the pan and the main valve body. If they are not loose, that indicates that the trans has failed and needs to be rebuilt. If they are loose, tighten them.

Doesn’t whining (vs grinding) mean pump starvation? Maybe your filter is clogged or somehow came out of place.
