Hi! I have been running the same make air filter for 140k. I just noticed the condition of the inner surface of the Charge Air Intake. The surface seems to be rough and you can see what looks to be all that is left of a clean, shiny finish. Anyone have an idea if this is normal, or did I 'dust' it? The leading edge of the Blades look to be OK with no dings. Thanks, Steve
I see what you mean. I was hoping that would be considered 'normal.' I have never seen another one so I don't know what the indications would be. The leading edge of each Blade is the same and there is no streaking from the leading edge across the face of the Blade. But I don't know if that means anything. Thanks for the Reply.
Is there any play in the wheel? A little side to side is ok if it doesn't hit the housing, should be no in/out play. Any chips like seen in the picture can throw it off balance, and you don't want that. If you don't have any play, maybe just a new wheel and you'd be good. If there is play, you need a rebuild also.
I don't see any issue with that impeller. The surface you are concerned about does look strange but I have seen plenty of dusted turbos and none of them had any surfaces like that either. I would not be concerned. Just take much care with your air filter and you should be fine.
That just looks like a poor casting of the aluminum to me. I wouldn't be too worried about it if it were mine, but a new wheel would probably be a decent idea.
Also, when looking for shaft play you have to wiggle the shaft harder than you would think you would to get it to move if there is shaft play. I'm not saying you need to use pliers (please don't do that) but you do have to wiggle it harder than you would think.
I think I wiggled it pretty good, I used my fingers and pulled until they slipped off each side. Pushed pretty hard against the impeller shaft axially and radially and not a hint of movement, yet it rotated very freely.
