Question 89' 2.9L swap with 4.0L

Hey everyone, new to the forum hoping to get answers and help out where ever i can.
I have a 89' B2 2.9L and A4LD tranny i think (4x4 auto. electronic push button). The engine needs work and in ordeer to do the work it needs to be pulled out. And sense i'm having to do that i just wanna put a bigger and newer enginein it hoping to better my mpg (bearly get 14 as is). i am hoping just to be a swap bolt out bolt in job. I dont have all the tools to do a whole lot of frabrication ( weilding,cutting,drilling..etc) if need be i can call some friends to help with that.
i know i can use a 4.0 from ranger, explorer, mazda B-series, aerostar. how ever not sure on the years or wiring harnesses and such.
what needs to be done for the 4.0 to fit?
and I'v read that my tranny is one of the worst made for my truck.suggestions, hints, tips and help would be greatly appricated.
