390 to 460 swap in a 1950 F1

Is their anyone who makes a 390 t0 460 motor mount kit or what pieces can I use to make this work? my 1950 f-1 already has a 390 with a 3 speed manual b/w t-85 r/11 w/o. Has anyone used sanderson ff462 headers in their 1948-52 f-1 and do these headers fit with the steering box in the stock location?

Um, me thinks you might get better/more responses if this was posted/moved to the "1948 - 1956 F1, F100 & Larger F-Series Trucks" section and not here in the "2009+ F150" area.

Just a hunch.

welcome.. can u tell us anything about the 390 mounts? have any pics?

there are tubular cross chassis mounts for 390s and 460s. and what front suspension do you have? this might be a factor too..

I have a 460 n my green truck, but it sits on a volare front clip.

Others with more 1950 experience will be along shortly..

Motor mounts would be the easy part. There's crossmember kits available that can make that part of the transition easy. But there's no bellhousing adapter kit that I know of to swap an FE bellhousing to the back of a 460. The bolt pattern there is completely different. You'll need to find a 460 manual trans bellhousing if you really want to keep your existing trans, and then you'll need to make sure it's of compatible depth for the input shaft. It could get complicated, time consuming, and I'll guarantee expensive. Manual trans parts for 460's aren't common and are really not cheap when you find them.

Besides the obvious extra cubic inches, what are you wanting to accomplish with the engine swap? The 390 is a great engine, has a lot of power potential and if it's already installed and in good running condition, you're planning a path of a lot of work and expense with little to no real gain.

To build upon what 52 Merc said, there have been several guys here on the FTE that have switched from a 460 to a 390 because of the fuel mileage. Further, with an aluminum top end, it will weigh a lot less than the big 460. Just a few of my thoughts.

what I am using for this 390 460 swap

My 1950 f-1 does have the tube type cross member for the 390 already in the truck. I am using the stock front axle and steering box. I will be upgrading the brake system to disc brakes and dual master cylinder later and the same for the steering. As fore the b/w t-85 r-11 transmission, I have a complete cast iron bellhousing set up out of a 1977 ford pick up, ( standard block plate, throw out fork, and dust boot.) My engine is a dove 460, I have a billet steel flywheel for this internally balanced engine. I believe this should solve any clutch and transmission issues. The exhaust system is the next issue, Sanderson does make a set of headers for this truck and engine combo, has anyone used them?
