Thinking of buying a 6.4

SRW? DRW? Gears? LB? SB? CC? Expect 10-14 mpg depending on trucks specs and options.

You will want to check all fluids and see what there is for service records. You wil want to have the coolant tested for nitrates.
Be sure to look at the radiator seams down by the tow hooks especially. Radiators are the weak point, bad design.
Look at the tail pipes, should be clean to grayish...if black then why?
Get an extended warranty since this is a new to you truck.
If you work it hard it will run good.

What physical parts did Ford improve that were on the 2010 and not on the 2008 0r 09 MY? Ford made changes in mechanical parts to the 6.0 starting in 2004 (and there were many) that were not interchangeable with later 6.0 engines, but I know of no part modifications between a 2008 and 2010 engine other then computer re-flashes.

Now I understand the meaning of "popping the hood"
To the OP: Just so you know my cousin (Ford diesel tech) replaces more 6.4 long blocks than 6.0 & 7.3 engines combined.
My advice is to purchase an extended warrenty and "DO NOT" modify this engine in any way that would void that warranty.

That would be good advice for any late model car or truck. Strange we haven't heard much about new long blocks or engines on here. In the past three years I only recall one or two. Maybe he's working on a lot of fleet trucks that are not being maintained. I'm sure some companys "buy em and run em" which would be a bad policy with the 6.4L. As to modifying them, there is a pretty strong and growing body of evidence that modding (deleting the dpf) the 6.4L is the way to ensure a long and trouble free life. Getting rid of the oil dilution can only be good for the engine. But, you can't very well do both, delete and buy an extended warranty. Everybody will have to choose or sell. I'ts a tough call for sure.
