intermittent....uh whirring sound front end....

2000 7.3 ex
wierd noise intermittent in front end sounds like a tire is rubbing and then goes away....no rhyme nor reason straight stetches or going around a corner....the beast has a 4inch lift and 315 bfg's so i am acustomed to wheel rub at full lock but same sort of noise comes and goes going straight. nothing obvious rubbing... idears? thanx

Wheel bearing maybe ?? also are you hubs locked in ?......that noise could be the little needle bearing in the spindle dry....had a an old Dodge that did that.

X2 on the needle bearing. When the sound starts, shift it into 4WD (without the hubs locked) and see if it immediately goes away. If so, it's likely a bad needle bearing. It's probably taken the axle stub shaft with it. If that's your problem, the sound is the stub shaft intermittently getting caught in the hub rotation and rattling around in the needle bearing.

Plan to replace the needle bearing, stub shaft and u-joint

Just note the Warn hub locks will not fix the problem. But it's a great excuse to get the Warn's anyway. I love my Mile Markers.

Could it be your fan clutch kicking in?
