460 In 1970 F250 4x4

I'M THINKING ABOUT PUTTING A 460 INTO A 1970 F250 4X4 WHICH HAS A 360 IN IT. I WANT THE EXTRA POWER BUT I WONDER IF I'M BETTER OFF REBUILDING THE 360.

You will need alot of things to put the 460 in, like engine mounts, bigger rad, accessory mounting brackets are different, exhaust, different tranny bell housing, may have to modify the driveshaft (although it is alot easier on the F250 4x4 due to the 3 driveshaft setup).
Rebuilding the 360 is easier but you will probably never get the power of the 460 out of it.
The hardest part is running down all the parts you need for the swap. Of course if you have a donor with the 460 setup......it would be easier.

ps
Try not to use all caps in your post some people do not like that

I put a 460 in my '71 F250 4x4. I used my existing NP435 tranny. The only things I needed to buy where a 351M Bell, new towers from L&L Products, and have the exhaust matched up. I used the existing 360 flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate. I still used the same radiator which is a 3 row, never had a problem. Of course I had to rebuild the 460. The kicker is that you need a 460 that was built '78 and prior (It has to be internally balanced). The crank should have a "2Y" casting on one of the front throws. Also you will have to use extra spacers inbetween the bell and engine. I used three all together.

There are other methods. One is to find a 460 bell and flywheel off a '78 manual pick-up. GOOD LUCK.

Another one is to use a 400 bell and flywheel. With the last two ideas you won't need to add spacers and you get to use a 12" clutch. I would have gone this way but I did my mod 10 years ago and was not aware off it.

Mine runs just fine for me. I haul wood and drag 35' fir logs around without a problem.

I just bought a 71 250 4x4 and while looking for information about swapping the engine, I found Heep's truck.
I love it.

I checked pricing on rebuilding the 360, and I got a range from 1800-2500. Then I found rebuilt 460's online for 1275 w/ a 7 yr warranty. As soon as I line up a mechanic, it'll be going in. I'd much rather get the extra power, and the gf says she wants more rumble.

I thought that I would go with a 5 speed tranny, as I spend a lot of time on the highway, and very little time pulling trees.
Any thoughts?

BTW, I'd really like to see some more pics of your truck, heep.

Greg , I really like the 2 blue's. they look like a paint scheme\colors that was very factory. Did you have a hard time finding your wheels and did you consider the fact that 16.5 inch tires are supposedly going to be history. Also , your truck looks so good with the 33's and NO LIFT. It's a perfect symmetry and blending of factory tires , factory springs and factory ride "heigth". People forget how good these trucks really looked when they were Brand new and sitting on the dealers lot waiting to be sold. Keep it just the way it came from the factory. Where did you get your springs and what did they ($$$) cost you??? I'm going to have to replace mine at some point. great looking truck......fd

Unfortunately, I don't have any more pics to show of it. I have been meaning to update the ones I have. Maybe this weekend I will. In the picture it looks nice, but it still needs allot of work. I want to do the power steering thing, but time is never on my side.

You will like the 460 swap. Good idea with the 5 speed. This set up I have is very good at keeping my gas money flowing out of my pocket.

To my best ofknowledge the two tone blue is the stock colors.

The rims all but one have the ford script stamped in them. I need to find 1 more yet. I think I spent a slow hunting month finding them. I probably spent around $250.00 buying them and getting them powder coated. They have been phasing out the 16.5 rims on the newer trucks for a couple years now. I don't think the tires will go for awhile because there is still a demand for them on the older rigs. That's my hopes anyway.

The springs are actually new stock highboy springs for a 1973 F250. They don't make the highboy springs for anything older than '73. That's what I was told anyway. They are the same thing except the front spring has one more leaf added to it. My last ones where totally collapsed from the weight of the 460, winch and bumper. The extra leaf should take care of that. I beleave the total installation was around $1200. Don't quote me on that. That included front and back springs, new shackles, grommets, hardware, and labor. Gitts Spring in Auburn WA. did the work.
