Had a 99 with the short threads blow out back in 2001. $3500 bill back then.
2003 with the longer threads has now blown one out at 85,000. Dont know bill yet but used an insert to fix it. It would still hold a plug but only by about 2 full turns. Back driver's side. This plug hole has had rusted plugs come out before. I think the cowl deflects water down the back two plug holes for some reason as the others are usually clean. Of course it took out the cop when it came out. This is third set of plugs in the truck. Change every couple years so I dont know how long (at least 2 years) or how many miles. Probably about 20k. Used a scope and camera to check and found most threads up top were gone, worn or rusted out. Only bottom couple were left. Never thought it would happen on the 2003 model with longer threads. Also not the weak plugs which break off inside. Thought I was safe in the middle years. Oh well, at least the head did not need to come off.
Bad part was I noticed a rough idle a week ago and thought about pulling plugs to replace, then thought I would wait till spring.
Torqued them. They were changed at about 40k and 65 k miles. One that blew out was Autolite. Used antiseize on them but Motorcraft this time and no antiseize. All other plugs fine. I relate it to the water getting in there in past. Dry and no rust on any this time, but dirty. Even sand and I have not been to sandy area in 2 years.
Bill- regularly $500 plus the tow. Buddy at Reese Auto did it for much less. Says he gets them in monthly. Most shops wont touch so they send him the work. 3 1/2 hours.

Sounds like you need a new set of boots with a little dielectric grease around the area that seals to the head, keeps moisture and dirt out of the plug holes.
