Lockable Gun Storage In These Old Pickup Cabs?...
I'd like to have secure lockable hand gun storage in my '78 F150 cab. I toyed with the idea of bolting a lock box behind the seat, to the floor. Then i wondered about trying to cram a thin lock box under the seat but dont think that would allow me to move the seat forwards or backwards. Then I wondered about using my glovebox. The actual glovebox is sheet metal, not the cheap cardboard stuff. But the door is just a push button door, not a lockable door. Can i replace the push button with a key lock?
What do ya'll use for secure hand gun storage in these old cabs?
(And yes, i have my CCL.)

You could use some thing like a small ammo box bolted behind the seat ,paint it to look like a first aid kit box. They are pretty heavy duty and would take a little time to break in to. I could pry the locked glove compartment door off before you could dial 911. Not that i'v ever done it.

Well for my two long guns, I made lockable racks that bolt to the back of the seat
Took about 2 hours to make each one.
As far as handguns go, I'd bolt a locking box to the back floorboard. If your fab skills are up to the task, you could even make a mount that allows you to secure the box using the seat bolts so your not drilling holes in your cab.

I'd suggest getting a can of Plasti-Dip and coating the parts in that so you don't scratch up your guns. You can get the stuff at Lowe's or Home Depot. Getting it in the spraycan might be better.

Ya, i was thinking it wouldnt be hard to pop the glove box door with a small pry bar, so i think that idea is out. The ammo box bolted to the rear cab floor is tempting, but it wouldn't take much effort with a small sledge or pry bar. I think i'll see what i can find for thick walled metal boxes that i can bolt to the floor. And i would think a keyed lock in the door would be more secure than a latch and padlock?

How about one of those small gun "lockboxes" they sell for keeping handguns in at home? It could be bolted to floor behind the seat. Most use the round multi-pin type lock, and are practically impossible to open without the key.
Something like this would really not have to be secured in the truck real well, to be an effective deterrent.

Ford offered two different 'gun safes' in the past. One took the place of the in-cab fuel tank, was first offered in 1969.
The 25 gallon auxillary tank was an option for 1967/72 Stylesides, but it became a mandatory order (obviously) when the in-cab tool compartment/gun safe was installed.
The other gun safe was offered for Super Cab's in the late 1970's, it was installed underneath the rear bench seat.
Peeps complained that the rear bench seat of Super Cabs was too low to provide adequate leg room, so FoMoCo came out with the Hi-Setter Kit that raised the seat 4 inches.
Then also offered both a lockable tool compartment and a lockable gun safe.
None of these tool compartments, gun safes, and the Hi-Setter kit, sold worth a hoot, were soon obsoleted.

on mine someone put brackets on the back of the front bech seat. I am going to build a slim box to hold a shotgun/rifle or any misc stuff there. As far as a handgun safe check bout at the front lip on the bench seats were you can raise the flap up on the bottom of the seat. You could get a pistol holster an mount it there & check bout putting one on the left side of the pedals an mount a holder/case there for one.

Tuffy is a company that sells lockable storage for broncos, Jeeps, blazers and other open tops. Sentry makes a small single gun lockable gun case that attaches to the truck via some pretty heavy duty cable. I just use the center console with a Law Enforcement retention holster bolted in. If you don't know the trick, you'll rip the entire console out before you get the gun. It's easy to hand if needed, out of the way if not, AND my kids CAN'T get it out.
This is what I use. Tested by myself a couple of buddies, and a great BIG friend Tug & Pull for TDL on Vimeo
For you gun guys this makes a SERPA look like Cr@p!!

You'll see that you can have multiple enclosures for multiple vehicles (or the closet at home) and simply take the lockbox part with you.
