Which transmission would you use?
I am in need of replaing my worn out C6 in my 79 4x4.
I don't know what to do...get a good rebuilt C6 or buy a ZF5 and install it or what..
I don't want to spend a fortune though but I don't want to regret something later down the road either.
Buddy of mine had a ZF5 for a 460; which would work since I have a 460 but he wants $500 for it. I know there will be extensive work that would have to go into the swap.
I plan to use this truck for mud bogging, but maybe towing some and just driving around on occasions.
Any ideas?
Thanks

what he said^^^^. if it's a straight line actual drag truck auto all the way. you'll never be able to shift as fast as an auto and anytime you push the clutch in to shift there is zero power going to the wheels. multi purpose vehicle is all up to preference. i like a stick shift for trails but always prefer an auto for mud.

A good stock rebuild will handle 500hp without issue. Beyond that there will be issues. For all other 300hp builds a c6 will last forever

That only if its rebuilt by a hackjob with inferior parts
I actually love the C6. I just have had one particular one in one particular truck give me headaches. The two other trucks I have with C6's are great, heck the best one I have was rebuilt by a cajun in his back yard... Go figure.

Being your rig is already set up for the C6, it would be more cost effective to rebuild or replace it. I have had some seriously effed up C6s that shouldn't even have been working, They hold up to a tremendous amount of abuse. They are arguably one of the strongest automatics ever produced, I would put a Ford C6 against a GM TH400 any day. I was in a similar situation with my Bronco, I opted to rebuild the C6. I'm with Dan, I like to wheel with a gear jammer in the trails... but for mud running and sand dunes I prefer the automatic.
