Been having trouble with my '86 Ranger running rough, stumbling lately. Got a code reader and the first code that came up was "83" in the KOEO which the code book says is failed EGR solinoid or a failing low speed fuel pump relay, the Haynes manual lists "84" as EGR problems, doesn't list an "83". Any suggestions which to pursue and how? Would checking fuel pressure at the shrader valve help, or would that just tell that the high pressure pump is working? Would appreciate any suggestions.
The code P083 - EGR control circuit failure (1984-1990), suggests something is wrong with the circuit that controls the EGR valve.
So begin with an inspection of vacuum lines & electrical connections to the vacuum switching valve thats used to control the EGR valve. Apply vacuum with a hand pump, to check the VSV & EGR diaphragms & lines, to make sure they're holding vacuum & that the interconnecting vacuum lines are in good shape, not dryrotted, cracked, worn through, loose fitting, ect. When you apply vacuum, you should see the EGR valves pintle move & hold steady, unless the EGR valves diaphragm is leaking vacuum. The VSV should also hold vacuum.
Given the vintage of your ride, what kind of shape is the EGR valve in????
