Why do you think previous owner did this?

I have it installed, I never drove the truck without it on. I get terrible gas mileage but I think that is related to the fact that I have large tires and small gears. I figured I needed and intake to match my much less restricted exhaust system.

As I recall the stock air intake up pulls fresh air from behind the grill. The cut off intake now will suck a mixture of cool and warmer air from inside the engine bay. Plus it could pick up more moisture when driving through rain - a wet paper filter won't flow well. If it were mine, I'd visit a bone yard and find the piece that was removed and replace.
That is not a very good mod. I would guess you lose power due to the heat ingested versus have any gain.

The Spectre intake seems just as good as K&N to me... has all the same stuff, big tube, big filter, big heat shield. I don't see any reason to buy the K&N filter for twice the price. There is no way the K&N filter is twice as good, seems to me like you'd just be paying $150 more for the name.
