Temp gauge sender. Location? Aftermarket gauge?

Newbie here to the forum...I tried the search function and couldn't find what I needed, sooo....
I recently acquired a 91 F-250 4x4. It's pretty much a beater, but I'd like to have all my gauges working. That said, my temp gauge doesn't work, so I started out by buying a new sender. I had some exhaust work done and tossed the sender at 'em and asked them to toss it on. They did, but the gauge still doesn't work. I see where the sender is located (driver's side of the intake), but it doesn't seem like there would any water passing through the intake at that location. I figure my fix would be to buy a gauge from Summit or whatever, but besides me taking out the sender to check, does anyone know if there's water going to that location where the stock sender is?
Sorry it's a dumb question, but I'm an old dude and I've only dealt with early SBC's in the past, and I've never seen temp sender in the intake.
Thanx!

I think there's two sending units...IIRC the one in the intake is for the EEC (Electronic Engine Control-the computer) and there's one in the block for the gauge...

@460:Thanks for the response. When I bought the sender at Napa, this was supposed to be the "Temp Sender Switch-Gauge", so I figured this would be the one for the temp gauge. I did see another sender listed as: "Coolant Temp Sensor". Guess maybe I gotta buy both to check...Drat!

Well, hopefully someone will chime in bud, I'm not positive there's two sensors...I think there is though...

You didn't say what engine you have, but on the 302 and 351, the gauge sender is in the intake manifold just behind the distributor. The computer temp sensor is on the passenger side where the heater hose attaches to the intake manifold fitting and has two wires. The gauge sender is a single wire - you can test the gauge and wiring by grounding the sender wire then turning the key on. The gauge should peg tot the hot side - don't leave the key on long, you can damage the gauge by leaving it pegged. Coolant runs from the front of both heads through the intake manifold to the thermostat and out to the radiator.
