the dealer tried to throw the sales pitch to me that the EB was SOOOOOO much better on gas then the non-EB engines that it wasn't even funny. well truck for truck, the only difference was the EB vs. the 5.0 and the color.... both 2011 XLT's, both 3.55 gears, same towing package same chrome package..... yet there was a $3500 difference between the two. after rebates and some swindling, they knocked the 5.0 down to 29K sticker price. they wouldn't budge on 32,500 on the EB after rebates.
to me that was 1 year apx worth of gas in the 5.0.....
i took the 5.0, and have been enjoying it very much. gas mileage is better than the 2010 5.4 that i traded (same package as well as same 3.55 gears), and although only one year difference, the smoothness, and regular driving is much smoother.
we really don't pull much with ours (that's what i have the Excursion for), maybe a single axle 7x10 trailer once a year or so, so the added EB torque wasn't a big selling point for me. we're very happy with the 5.0. i honestly can't tell a huge amount of difference between the old 5.4 and the new 5.0, but that's just me.

I got to admit I took the 5L cool aid I had a very problematic '11 2.3L Ranger that the dealer tried to fix 5x's and could not. After that fiasco I was all set on getting another '11 Ranger while they still made them new but a 4.0L, 4x4, Sport, tow pkg etc.. I actually prefer a "smaller" or more mid-sized truck to a true full sized.
My dad said at the last minute, before you get another POS Ranger why don't you look at a Tundra or at least an F150 (My dad is a Toyota guy) so after all the problems I had with my Ranger he gave me a ton of crap for staying with another domestic, but that’s where I'm at home. Anyway just for fun I went back to the dealer, where I found the truck I have now. Salesman pulls out this XLT, Chrome-pack, 5.0L, Supercab and says take her for a spin; I will see you when you get back. While I did not beat on the truck or take it over 4K rpm on the test drive, I gave it say 1/2 throttle getting back on the freeway headed back to the lot and heard what sounded like the meanest growl I've ever heard from a stock truck. When I got back I asked the salesman if the truck had an aftermarket exhaust and he said it did not, he then said it was bone stock but for some reason Ford made these things sound mean as hell.
While there I heard a guy leave with an EcoBoost and I honestly didn't like the sound or how quiet it was. I'm 33 years old, so I'm not quite ready for a Cadillac quiet truck yet if that makes sense? Perhaps when I'm in my 60's god willing but not right now. Do it all over again would get another 5L for sure. Not knocking the Eco, I think it is an awesome idea and a great engine for a truck I just want to be able to own real V8 before they all become Hybrid, have start & stop systems where the rumble shuts off at stop signs or they go back to power levels like they had in the late 70’s & early eighties.

While its true the 5.0L and Ecoboost both have only been out for a short time. I think the argument people make about the 5.0L having superior reliabilty to the Ecoboost is that, the 5.0L's inital design parameters (N/A OHC V8) is the same inital design parameters that the 5.4L and 4.6L had...Two engines which have proven themselves reliable (not of course without some trial and error) but none the less reliable.
This was one of the factors among many others that pushed me into a 5.0L over the Ecoboost. Even though I fully acknowledge that the 5.0L is a new engine, I feel more comfortable with the fact it shares much of its basic design with the old 4.6L and 5.4L engines.
As always, not knocking the Ecoboost. Just wanted to clarify.

I am hoping to order a truck on Monday if all goes well and the engine is one of the decisions I have yet to make.
Since my build is a 157" WB I am limited to either the 5.0L V8 or the EB but I have to say if the 3.7L V6 was standard in that build, I'd probably be fine with that.
The reason being that I don't tow often and haul relatively light lawn mowing equipment, snow blowers, etc., I don't really need the EB or even the 5.0L.
If my '93 had 185HP, wouldn't the 3.7L be enough with 302 HP? I know the torque is what is most important but man, nearly 20 years difference in models and the truck has come a long way.
Anyway, the salesman and my son are pushing me to get the EB but I don't know that I want to pay a premium for it. I'm quite certain the 5.0L will be more than enough for my needs.
I'm sure those that tow large and heavy trailers need to look at the EB and/or 6.2L but for the hockey dad like me, it is probably overkill.
The real question is whether the EB gets 21 HWY MPG vs 19 for the 5.0L in 4x4 form. That is 10% and nothing to sneeze at. That is one reason I am thinking about it. I am skeptical though since there are many reports of the EB not living up to the EPA ratings. Not sure whether to attribute that to folks with a heavy foot, the gearing, or the testing conditions of the test itself.
I just hope that whatever engine you chose, that you are happy with your decision, that is all that matters in the end.
