Does any one know if the factory outside tire rack is strong/safe enough to act as a mounting point for a bike rack? My rack is the kind that mounts via a plate through the tire and it weighs about 30 pounds -- my bikes weigh 21 and 24 pounds.

I'm guessing that the rack can handle it, but I'm wondering about holder that keeps it against the outside of the tailgate.

i have seen quite a few bikeracks on the tire rack so im assuming it will be fine ... i mean it will hold a tire and rim for 15 years so i think you will be fine.

 

I drove over 3,000 miles from Anchorage, AK to Grand Forks, ND with my bike rack mounted on my tire. As a safety precaution I used a cable and locked the bike to the tire rack itself just incase the Bike rack fell off.

Luckily I'm 6'3" because now my rack is over 6' off the ground...

 

The spare tire carrier is capable of holding alot of weight. I had a 37" tire and two bikes on mine before. The tire weighed a ton and the bikes were not an issue. It works well and I have never had a problem.
