240,000 miles plus on a 6.4L

There is hope for all of us, there is a 6.4L F350 on the fort myers fl craigs list with over 240,000 miles. Ad says the truck runs great, they are asking $14,000. I'd take that, another 200,000 miles and $14,000. You bet I would.

You sound pestimistic that your engine will not last for 200k miles! With your oil change program I would expect minimal 500k miles.

The exceptions are: burned valves, broken EGR cooler hydro lockin the engine, premature upper valve train wear, HPFP failure, DPF that don't last 150k miles, and cavitation issues.

Just kiddin of course...

I see no reason for the motor itself to run well over 200K.

DPF I don't think would make it though. I know of one that was still good at 160K but driven long distances, not city driving.

I'm not worried about my DPF, it's in the attic of my shop. And I am confident in making 150,000 or so. By then I'll want something different anyway. Still, it's nice to see some of these trucks get up in the high mileage category. I'd like to talk with the owner but it's on a lot.

200k to me still seems like a low mark. I too feel an engine like this should see about 400k..

I don't know if you did the right thing, how about you come back in a year and let us know. The stuff about the F350 being a commerical is just bad government. No truck that's not used in some sort of commerce should be classed commerical just so the local/state governments can rip you on taxes and road tolls. The difference being that the owner of a commerical vehicle can write that expense off as a business expense, a guy pulling his 5th wheel can't . Even the feds aren't that greedy, if you're not hauling for hire you don't have to comply with the DOT rules. But you get the government the citizens want, right?

As to the growing oil, I trhink you have the same DPF clean technology on the 12 as you had in the 08. They still use the back injectors to pour fuel into the exhaust and some of it will still get in the oil. The stuff you have to buy and add to the truck is to help control NOX, not clean the DPF. At least that's how I understand it. Stand by and somebody who knows for sure will answer. Anyway, good luck with the 12 and come by and let us know how it works out for you.

I think your going to be really satisfied with the 6.7. The 6.7 experiences less regens therefore suffer less oil dilution which is a good thing. The biproduct of less regens yields better fuel economy and a better lubricated engine which again promotes a durable engine. Also the 6.7 relies less on EGR which again a good thing to improve fuel economy and durability, but requires DEF which IMO is a good tradeoff.

Good luck....

I thought he said he couldn't do it any longer, maybe a change in the law. I can tell you for sure it's that way in NY. I came across a bridge from NJ to NY a couple years ago. Bridge looked like it was from the 1920s. I mean the lanes were skinny and I'm driving a DRW truck and pulling a 5er 8.5 ft wide and I'm thinking they should consider condemming the bridge. I get to the NY side and there is a toll gate. I think it was $23.50 or maybe $32.50, anyway I say what up with this and she says commerical vehicle with 4 axles. It's automatic in NY and you can't drive on their parkways either. bummer.

your right about it being new in mass well newly enforced as of this year anything over 10001 has to have comm plates and dot inspection as on 2012 even my insurance adjuster arned me about it so before they refuse my new plates im down sizeing and i dont need the 350 gvw for what im towing anyways so maybe its all for the better the 6.4 i think is going to turn into a horror story in time an dim not wanting another in my life im retired and choose to go the easier route thanks guys foxtrk2

Stanley,

If I recall correctly, are you draining your oil partially and replacing with new oil between oil changes? If so, how's that working? OA's?

I did it for 2 cycles, 10,000 miles. I had one OA done after the first 5000 miles and it was very good. Every thing in bounds. By the end of the second cyclle I had decided to delete and just happened to find a used tuner at the right time and went ahead and did it. I'm convinced that the oil program was very helpful to the engine and had I not deleted I'd still be doing it. The program was every 1000 miles drain down to 1 quart low and replace that quart with new. Had it down to about 15 mins.
