1977 F250 with 460 -- maybe

So... I had originally posted over in the 400 section, but after posting a picture, it seems that I actually have a 460... not original, but at some point, someone changed it

4bbl edelbrock on it.

So..... I'll ask my question again here, just to have it in the right place. What's good, bad about these engines? Oil pressure seems pretty darn low (less than 1/4 on the guage when warmed up, about half when started cold, I have brand new 5W30 in there now (about 20F outdoors). It seems to run really nice once it starts, and it'll start right up when warm, but when cold, you have to pour gas in the top of the carb to get it to fire - -then it starts right up, and idles pretty well by itself after 30 seconds or so. I'm putting a mechanical oil gauge on it to get actual numbers on that, and a mechanical temp gauge since that doesn't work either.

Any way to figure out what year this engine is? Valve covers say "powered by Ford" on them... magnetic pickup in the distributor, no points.

Thanks

Z

Look on your intake for a part number , D5TE-XXXXX or E1TE-XXXXX etc .

C= 1960's
D= 1970's
E= 1980's

second digit is the year of that decade

T is for "Truck" , or the threee digit could be a wide range of other Ford applications .

Those are casting revision numbers not actual dates.

If you get the number there and the number off the block we can get you in teh ball park if not the exact year. Example D1VE blocks were used from 71 thru 78 and actually some in 79 (was a mid year change) D9TE used mid year 79 through end of production.

5w30 is not a good choice for an old 460. Change it out to some 15w40 shell rotella, even in cold weather. Your cam will thank you.

...and don't believe the stock oil pressure guage...they're notoriously inaccurate.
