trying to determine my truck's history

I bought an 86 dually crew cab 6.9 from a local guy. he had owned the truck since it was new. He's my question...he had a picture of himself next to the truck from way back in 86, and it was a dually then, but my axle code is C5. I checked this AFTER I had to replace brakes/seals on the rear end. It seemed like there were spacers on the hubs, and that is what made me curious. they were about 3" and bolted onto the hub. I have read that there were new trucks that were upfit to DRW at the dealership, but as I recall these were like early 90's trucks. any insights? I would like to go back to single wheels if i can without too much work. That said, if it is a SRW truck converted to DRW, I have a dually bed in ok/rough shape as well as a nice set of alloys and spacers that I would trade to someone looking to go the other way. That is IF it is/was a single rear wheel truck.

If you need any more info, i can provide, as well as a pic of the rear hub assembly on my truck.

Actually, Ford outsourced that stuff (I think to Kevin Marti) who now charges money for it.

If you (Cav) could post a picture of the Certification Label on the driver's side door jamb I might be able to look up some information but I'll probably have to ask NumberDummy for help, I haven't seen anything in the books that explicitly tells me if a dually or single rear wheel.

Here is a link to a pic of the door tag. The axle code is c5, which is a single, with 4.10 gears afaik.

Kevin Marti has had the Build sheet information for quite awhile and ford had to contact him with requests.

As long as you went through Ford though it was free. Are you saying this changed CTUBUTIS?

If you went through Marti you got a more comprehensive report though, but paid for it.

That is my understanding from having read stuff on here, although I forget from who.
Thank you for spelling my name correctly. Feel free to use lowercase once in a while, or just call me Chris.

Chris it is then.

I've been trying to look up the information in my books and got this so far...

2FT = Ford Truck Of Canada - Complete Vehicle
J = GVWR Class H- 9,001-10,000 lbs
W36 = F-350 Crew Cab Dual Rear Wheels
1 = 6.9 L
8 = Check Digit
G = Year Model = 1986
C = Plant Of Manufacture = Ontario Truck
B05148 = Production Sequence Number

Code = W361 = F-350 Crew Cab Dual Rear Wheels.

Can you confirm that Chris?

2FT = FoMoCo Canada complete truck, yes
J = 9,0001-10,000 Class H is correct according to the new books...
1 = 8 cyl. 6.9L 420 cid Diesel-powered, available 1983/87
G = MY 1986, yes
C = Ontario Truck (you'd think I'd have that memorized by now)

Yes, everything you list is what the new books also show except for the dually-wheel designation:

*sigh* Another case where the older books are more useful?

Thanks for your help thusfar. Does anyone have a pic of a dually rear hub vs a single. I would swear that there are spacers...about 3" each on the outside of each hub.

Here is where I got the idea that C5 was a single: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...xle-codes.html

IIRC the information you had come up with matches what's in the Ford books, which you can verify here:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post11225573

I will have to look in the books to see if I can find any dually-hub pictures of stuff.....

To further add to the mystique of this truck, I have the original window sticker and it says nothing of dual rear wheels...but in the options, it lists tires, written as follows
LT235/85Rx16E-4 BSW ALL-TER
LT235/85Rx16E BSW ALL-TER AT SPARE

Also the truck is listed as F351 4x4 crew cab pickup/168

Do you think the # in read the number of tires? it seems odd to me that no mention of the dually is listed, but the truck was a special order.

I have no idea; NumberDummy may know as he was a partsman for 30-some years at Ford, 81-F-150-Explorer may know as he was a mechanic.

I can tell you, though, that I'm not finding anything in either my 1981 factory shop manual nor the 80/89 factory parts catalog on any sort of factory-supplied spacers like you're describing.

Here are some pictures....

Single rear wheels, from the parts book:

Single rear wheels, from the shop manual:

Dually rear wheels, from the parts book (on a 1989 F53/59 chassis-cab truck):

I'm not finding anything more than that but you may give it some more time to allow others to chime in....

Chris, thanks for your help! I belong to many forums and I have never had anyone actually go to this length to help me solve problem.

The hub actually doesn't look like the pics all that much. I will pull wheels tomorrow after work and post a few pics. i am gonna pull the front too since I have seen a spaced d60 with my own eyes and I will know what i am looking at there.

No prob, glad to help.

This is one of the reasons why I like this place so much - many of us here have books and/or pictures and/or lots of experience and are willing to help others.
