My top-notch rebuild guy says that the Mitsubishi brushes are harder material than most other starters, and hardly ever go out.

According to him, that solenoid that you replaced is the culprit almost every time.

If you greased the gear reduction gears when replacing the solenoid, you should be good-to-go for another 200,000 or so.

Congratulations on replacing only the necessary materials. America needs to get back to this way of thinking! We used to FIX things. Now, we just replace.......

I agree Pop. Now, I am only 25 so I can't speak much of how things used to be, but there is no way I am replacing a perfectly good starter that has a bad switch. When it caught the motor and cranked successfully it worked great so I figured it wasn't anything in the starter that was broken, but the solenoid instead. Not to mention I have 155,000 on the clock and the starter already has a refurbished sticker on it....there is no way it's going out again this early.

I didn't open up the starter, and I couldn't find a solenoid part # anywhere so I had it replaced at a shop near my office for $30. Well worth it considering I needed the truck that night and didn't have the part to REALLY do it myself....still beats replacing the entire thing with a lower quality non-OEM starter.

The cost of the solenoid isn't much less than the $30 you have in it, so they didn't ask much for their labor.

Yea, we used to fix things. There was a time we used mechanical fuel pumps. The diaphram and valves in the rebuild kit were under $5. Then some company bought up all the resources for the parts and only made entire fuel pumps available, for considerably more, naturally.

They've attempted to do that same thing with starters and alternators too, but there are still lots of people selling just the parts.

Where did you go to have your solenoid replaced? I'm having starting issues and suspect this is the same problem i'm having.
