Its a 1999 f-550 and it wont start. I first tried and all was normal. Turn the key "please wait" lights up and I crank it over. It was cold so it didnt stay running. Went to start it again and noticed no "please wait" light this time and it still wont start. Any ideas as to where to start?
Check the #30 fuse under the dash. If it's blown, then unplug the fuel bowl heater and replace the fuse. The fuel bowl heater plug is on the backside of the fuel bowl on top of the engine.
Thats just what it was too. I put another 30 amp fuse in there started up but then blew a min later and the truck shut off. Any way of keeping it running so I can get it to the garage? Leave the bowl unpluged or.....?
The fuse that keeps blowing is a 30 amp fuse at the bottom right of the fuse box. Could not find what it was marked. No book, gotta look it up.
I disagree, the heater is useful for 2 things, heating the fuel when it's cold out, (so the wax doesn't plug your filter) and it is also your "Water In Fuel" sensor.
Unplug the fuel bowl heater and then replace the fuse UNTIL you can replace the heater.
And I would buy a Ford heater, I bought an aftermarket one and it was junk.
Did you try and jump sccross the glow plug relay?
Same thing happened to me and it was the HUGE yellow 30 amp fuse in the box under the hood (driver's side).

^^^^This. With the ULSD it important to keep it warm, it gels very easy. Not only does the heater keep the filter clear, it warms fuel going back to the tank. If you have every tried to remove an IPR on engine that was just shut off you learn real fast how well that heater works.
I have read here before that the heater was ok to leave disconnected? I guess I have been lucky, I have had my heater unpluged for a year with no problem. It was 10 degrees this morning and it starts great. I guess I should replace mine?

If nothing else, you really need the WIF so you don;t damage your injectors.
And IF your fuel gets cold enough to gel, minimally it will restrict the flow through the filter. Maybe not enough to starve it.... but probably enough to wear your pump.
