1977 4wd f150 transmission swap. Need advice!

I am currently installing a 1978 c6 transmission into my 1977 SWB 4wd F150 with a 400 motor. Since the transmission came out of a 2wd truck I am not rebuilding the transmission and swapping out the tail piece for the 4wd for awhile. I installed the motor and transmission today and when I went to bolt up the crossmember for the transmission it became apparent that the crossmember for the c6 is not going to fit with the crossmember that came stock in the 4wd. I was wondering if I could cut the ears off of the stock crossmember so that the c6 crossmember would fit above the stock one? If I did that would it allow the frame to twist or would the added c6 crossmember add enough support at the top of the frame to compensate for the ears being cut off? I will try to get photos tomorrow because I know this is a bit vague. Also at what angle should the transmission sit and how do you measure that? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
