18 ga will work for most areas.....floor, bedsides, etc are closer to 16 ga. Use "black" sheet metal, not galvinised.

As tinman said, 18 ga for most body panels. Use cold rolled steel, Hot rolled has a mill scale on it that is a pain to remove.

fyi, TX should have many metal suppliers that you could get a 48x96 sheet for around $50. Don't settle for a 24x24 inch square at the box store costing half of that....

Cold rolled is also harder (course you loose this if you heat it up to critical). In my experience, at least from where I get anything hot rolled, it doesn't have scales but rather has been forge-blued, course that depends on how they went about making it, some methods could make it very scaled which would be a major pain.

No mig welder around here. So I know to just tack tack tack and then tack some more till it's a complete weld. I learned that on Search and restore.

Does anyone remember the owner that did a lot of welding on his truck fenders, etc? He was doing it all in short period of time . I thought it was last year but can't find the article. It had good hints and good pictures. My winter project, if I can get organized. thanks, chuck
