90 F250 w/ 7.3 diesel

Hi all,

I just got a 90 F250 auto 4x4 w/7.3 diesel.

The motor has a 151,154 miles on it. It runs good no smoke but it seems like it could use a little more power.

I found a mechanic they looked it over and everything looks good, except it needs a radiator flush, trans service and sterring linkage replaced.

I thought about putting on a banks turbo system but I have had 2 people 1 of them also being a mechanic saying i shouldnt put a turbo on because of the mileage. I dont want to chance putting one on and blowing something.

Any opinions on that? I thought maybe just doing there stinger system and there trans commander instead.....

I also found out it has dana 70 limited slip rear end with 3.55 gears. The front is a dana 50 open with 3.54 gears.

It has 36" tires on it so maybe I should change out the gears to better accomadate the tires and that will help....

Any opinions or thoughts would great!

Steve

I think someone is pulling your chain. Why would a turbo hurt anything? I don't think that Banks Power makes that stuff only to have something break. The mileage you have on that truck is only mid life in my book. Those things last forever. My buddy has a 7.3 idi diesel with 320k on the clock and its not slowed down a bit . He also has a 6.9 with just over 200k and he has fuel pump work done to it and he drives it like he stole it(not the best driving in the book)and still runs like he got it new. Adding a turbo wuold improve the efficiency of it not hurt it. and also increase economy too. Make sure that when you flush the radiator to put the additive in it when you fill it back up or else cavitation will get the best of you. I think it is Fw-16(someone correct me if I am wrong)for the additive.

Thumbs up 90 F250 w/ 7.3 diesel

Run a compression check and if it all looks good, by all means, put the turbo on! THe 3:55 gears are rather high. Stock tires(235/85R16) will help with the power. Or change to 3:73 gears, although the tires would probably be cheaper.

On the additive you can use FW-16 from Ford, NAPA Kool or Fleetguard DCA4 and there are some others. The other option would be to put in a pre-charged coolant filter. Argve has some information on doing one.

Back to the turbo, everything mentioned above is true. I do have to disagree on the increase of mileage with the turbo. Many have found that the MPGs actually drop after a turbo install. Of course it's due to the fact that now we think we need to stick our foot in the IP to hear that turbo spool up as soon as possible!

True! I even like to hear that turbo spool up and whine like it does. Thanks for reasuring me on the additive for the coolant!!

I talked to the local turbo shop around my house, that installs Banks Systems when I had a 7.3, and they said that the best way to tell if a turbo will gain you noticeable power is to run a compression check. They told me unless you have a minimum of 350psi on every cylinder then a turbo will just blow the boost past the rings. They also told me a a new 7.3idi had about 450-475psi compression.

Steve,
I would not blink an eye on adding a turbo to your setup. I have talked to guys that have added turbo's to truck that had as many miles on the clock as you have. They have not had any problems with from doing so.

For information on adding a coolant filter, banks turbo, and other various goodies. You can check out my website.

I detailed my turbo install, amoung other things. Next thing is tearing out and replacing the supply valve in the injection pump. I hope to some day get my hands on an extra injection pump to do a complete tear down to gain some insight as to what is happening inside to better troubleshoot them.

i had a non-turbo before my durrent powerstroke..look at my gallery to see it...thats another story.. but anyways they just dont have the ***** that you want....nothings probably wrong. I had 35" tires with 4.10 LS with true dual exhaust, 254,000 miles and would have to keep it floored to keep up with 70-75mph traffic on the freeway. I looked into banks, and everyone says good things about it and sure seems like a hard-to-beat system but i personally just couldnt afford it. i wish you luck.

02superstroker,

But you could afford a 2002 truck Last time I checked payments on a new truck were in the 600+ range. I paid much less than one years payments for the banks system, actually less than six months worth of payments. Don't get me wrong, a new stroke will be more power, but with the banks system it's dang close.

well if you looked at my gallery i didnt have much of a choice in getting another truck...the 94 was, well, not in working order. I picked the 2002 up used with 51,000 miles and got a great deal on it. When i have to have a truck i have to have one.. but putting three grand into a truck with 254,000 miles is a bit harder but thanks for looking into my financial life
