Chief, You need a small car to commute with. I am faced with the exact same issue with my 66. I keep my Taurus truck for non loaded runs.
SuperSabre didn't drop any numbers for the cost of materials & labor but a car (beater) can be bought with the same money, and you have auto overdrive, AC, power windows etc.
Hmmm - thanks for the insights guys, I better consider an overdrive unit for my 3-speed - or perhaps going with an automatic. Either of you know how I would locate an overdrive unit for this 3-speed trans?
Yeah John, me and the wife commute in our Kia - the truck is for fun, and trips to the local dump. I am amazed at how much gas this thing guzzles! I've driven some manual trans vehicles in my lifetime - this thing is geared low in the rear too.
I think Gear Vendors makes an overdrive that might work for you, but it and the driveshaft modifications required would be pricey. I certainly can't fault John's logic (jowilker above) - it sounds as if you have your economy car already. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet when it comes to gas costs. When you find out how much the modifications you want to do cost, and compute how many gallons of gas that same amount of money will buy, you could drive for a long time on that money without the mods. I did my mod partly because I'd dug myself a hole (through the law of unintended consequences) and pretty much had to! I don't think it will help my fuel mileage to any appreciable amount, certainly not in town. But it does drive a lot nicer. Good luck!
