FE 390 oil dipstick tube

crazy question, installing my oil dipstick tube into the block, slides in mounting tab lines up with lower header bolt hole, seems like it should drop in further, there is an area higher up on dipstick tube tht looks like it would need to meet with the block to secure dipstick tube.

I am not able to post pick, I hope my description is understandable. I have 5 quarts in engine, system has been pressure primed, if the dipstick is in correct, showing apprx quart low, this looks like it is an original oem dipstick tube assembly
thanks for any info available

Hey no problem...

Who would of thought something so seemingly simple as a dipstick could be so complex, it's just one of the many 'quirks' specific to FE's

I second that you run 6qts instead of 5.

Surprisingly weird is the FE.

1965/76 F100/350: There are FIVE possible FE dipsticks. Look on the dipstick for its stamped ID number (similar to this: C7TE-6750-AA), post what it is.

My dipstick looks the same way; a ring around it about 1/4'' from where it meets the block that looks like it should seat against/in the block. FYI, the 1976 F series owners manual states 6 qts for the 300, 302, 360, 390, 460, this includes 1 qt for the oil filter.

Does it really matter?

Drain the oil, add 6 qts, run the engine, shut it off and then check where it's at. That's where it needs to be from now on.

The 1975 dipsticks were the change in wording for the warranty oil specs.

Well, my snide comment was actually directed at "another" poster...

As for you, I will reserve my hatred based on that killer 35+ mpg small diesel Ranger of yours.

Haha, fair enough....Merry Christmas Josh

what kinda mileage are you getting out of your gasser Ranger, is a diesel swap feasible given the current pump prices?

LOL, hope the day went well for you as well.

All Summer I averaged around 23 mpg with the 2.9 gasser. It has dropped to around 19 with the temps well below 32. Which I figured, my old 3.8 Taurus daily beater was the same way, Summer was fantastic, colder air temps dropped the MPG. I averaged 24 in that car.

I have been trying to really dig into what the "State" thinks on diesel swaps.

So far, it looks like a yearly inspection of at least $90 which includes a visual plus emissions. 1982 and newer gas engine is a $25 test every two years.

After the holidays I'll have a chance to track a couple local guys that have diesel swaps to figure out what they are thinking of the new system we have here.

Josh
