5w40 oil WOW and cold start issue.

2000 F350 219,800 miles.

Did replace oil pump with melling. Didn't notice any difference.

I switch from 15w40 to 5w40. Could say HUGE difference. Running quieter I couldn't hear anymore plus I wear hear aid. Accerlation were much better. Doesn't feel sluggish like 15w40 did.

Start little easier but still had 1 issue.

On this cold start issue. It had 8 new motorcraft glow plugs 7K miles ago and new Starter plus 2 batteries. New Relay by preview owner.

If you turn on and wait for light go away. Crank nothing fire it would crank/ No smoke out exhaust. Stop and try again turn on glow plug. Wait 50 seconds then it will fire it with minor of white smoke.

I notice first issues happened about 2 weeks. On hot start it seem it crank for like 3 second before fire. If compare to my Uncle stock F350 100K. His start fine. If compare to my friend's F350 83K who had tuner on it. Wouldn't start at random time in summer It just crank if turn off then turn on it fire and running. Sound alike to mine but mine would fire after couple seconds of crank.

After Dec 26th I will test fuel pressure. Was hoping it issue with that.

Do you know what relay the previous owner put in? From my little knowledge if its from Napa some times they have flaky ones that don't last very long. You could try using your AIH relay to test that or just go buy a new one.

Its amazing how much a difference oil weights make isnt it? I run 15 - 40 all summer and then switch to 5 - 40 for the cold maine winters (although it hasnt been all that cold lately, not complaining). But you are right, idles a lot quieter and starts much easier.

Hope you figure out your starting issue. Like I said from my little experience and reading of other posts around here that's where I would start (no pun intended )

Yeah the 5/40 oil makes a big difference on cold mornings. Your injectors may also be getting a little worn. I suspect that on my truck and I'm at about 200k miles.

I found doing the in tank mods and Clays frx helped the truck start faster as well. The factory setup tends to suck in air between the pump and tank and the return is to close to the pick-up on the stock set-up. Clays frx is nice. It gets rid of the dead head issue with the fuel system and really seems to smooth things out. It also comes with 3 different springs to adjust fuel pressure which bumps it up from the stock setting.

The gpr can stay on for up to 2 minutes so you may want to wait a little longer on colder mornings.

3 rebuilt injectors that chunk of my wallet. $120 each but supposed to be $160 each after explain and friend work there I knew in High School.

3 used injectors from junkyard T444E with only 90K miles. They look far best condition if compared to my original injectors when I pull. Look it was 300K miles since it was nasty.

Before that it wouldn't start itself without plug block for 1 hour in summer. Now I can start in 19oF without plug block but that require 5 times of crank/ glow plugs then crank before it fire. That when I had bad starter so it crank slow.

It had little miss on cold it was #8 injector. I try Junkyard one not work. Sent to shop for rebuilt. Same result. It alway show #8 injector. That happened when I replace CPS after. I ignore that for 2 months now.

Going test tomorrow with cold engine again to test which bad injectors with AE scanner.

For relay I had no idea but it work right. Volt show on both studs when test.

Thank I will wait when gas tank is empty. Just filled 35 gallons of diesel last night for $3.65 in Michigan. I had leak that only happened at random. It come from top tank. Last time I pull down and couldn't find where leak come from.

The #8 injectors is going to show higher on the cct. Clays frx helps lower that number a little. That is part of the dead head issue with #8. Ford started to put a ll injector in 8 to help with the cackle issue but is more of a band aid to mask the poor fuel system design. The orginals cps seemed to be the best and gives lower cct numbers but can't find those anymore. Post the numbers you are seeing for the cct.

Wouldn't the three injectors from the t444e be single shot injectors?

You might want to add an LED to the cold side of the GPR then route to ground. Mount the LED in the dash and then whenever the GPR is on the LED will turn on. Just wait for the LED to go off before cranking. It sounds from your original post that you tried to start without letting the glowplugs run long enough...remember the "Wait to Start" light is NOT connected to the operation of the GPR (Ford fumbled the ball on that one).

They are AD. When I went to junkyard I saw they load T444E for scrap. I run to them what you doing with them. Thpl'ey was going scrap. I told them I buy parts. $30 for 4 injectors and 1 valve cover gasket wiring.

I wish I pull 8 injectors but one side I couldn't remove due it on bin.

I wish but they want $900 I tried offer $. I wish I pull IPR, HPOP, ICP sensor, and EOT sensor back in August.

Now I saw T444E there but it 1997 which is early 7.3L powerstroke. Only I could say some are same parts but different injectors I believe it say AB.

But what scare me that it belong to TruGreen. Believe or not their tons fleet of International 4900 with T444E They junk them after 80-130K miles. Most are neglected maintain or mechanic ******* not know how to repair instead throw parts. Most them come to junkyard NONRUNNING. Their radiator is nightmare I never see one like. Front of radiator is cover in 1/2" of oily dirt. No wonder it overheat.
