Not an easy swap. It CAN be done, but you'll need engine, mounts, trans, trans crossmember, PCM, wiring harnesses, cluster, etc, etc, etc, etc.
Basically, you need a donor truck to take EVERYTHING from.

im in the process of swap'n the v6 over to the 5.4, ive had my v6 since 99, done every thing i could to it and it still not what im looking for, yeah you get raged hard with a v6 truck but it will smoke a gt in a heart beat if you do it right, alot of money and time also needs to be invested in it. its my time to swap, but in my case i have a whole truck to just swap, mines a 99 that i will keep, but i i hate the PAT's system so im dropping years and swapping with a 98 5.4, alot less head ach, so in which im going to use all the parts that i can, cluster, harness, ecu and all that i can. i plan on it taking about two weeks to finnish due to a nagging job and a head ach of a girlfriend but its what ever.

In my opinion, for the effort involved, unless you want so bragging rights, you are better off selling the truck you have and buying the truck you want.

I'm also interested in how this engine swap turned out. I own a '98 F-150 with the pile of junk 4.2 V6 engine. Why didn't Ford just do the right thing and recall the 4.2 engine? The 4.6 V8 and the 3.9 I-6 engine is two of the best engines Ford ever made. In my opinion Ford should've done the right thing and treated their customers right by recalling the early 4.2 V6 engines.

What was the problem with the v6's? We have a 97 with it that's never had engine issues.

03 f150 4.2 to 4.6 v8 from 98 expedition

Hello,
Im currently taking on this swap in my engine class, I have a 4.6 from an expedition, ecm, and engine harness. From what it seems like is that this swap is either not worth it or has never been done. From my understanding is the 4.6 and 4.2 automatics share the same transmission (4r70w). So apart from that Im only guessing/hoping it all fits and plugs in. Does anyone know If it really even is possible? I've already accepted the idea of having to buy a new cluster/dash harness/pcm/electrical components. The whole plan is to eventually be faster than a lightning.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

All three engine offerings share the 4R70W...in name only. The 4.2 doesn’t share the bell housing bolt pattern with the v8s, so it’s a unique part.

My advice: Swap a whole donor Triton drivetrain from the same year you’re donating to. The dash stuff doesn’t have to be swapped, but you need to find a dealer that can reflash PATS to match the engine computer.

That being said, of course it’s possible. The factory kinda does it (bolt the right parts in and go) and the assembly line isn’t full of rocket scientists.

A 4.6L will not bolt to a transmission from a 4.2L, even though both are 4R70W transmissions.
