So, are you thinking it should be a 460?

Actually, once the exhaust manifolds, alternator, P/S pump, A/C compressor, carb, etc are bolted on it'll look quite a bit bigger. And, you really. Ever see that view since the radiator et al are usually in the way.

My feeling on the 351M/400 is that as bulky and heavy as those engines are, why not go for broke and stick a 460 in.

That would certainly make things easier. However, that wouldn't provide the ~16 MPG I expect to get on the highway, either. And, since I don't expect do a lot of towing, and certainly not of heavy trailers, I don't truly need the torque the 460 would provide. Besides, I already had the 351M. But, I thank the two you, Bill and Jim, for your input.

Bruno, the cab was still up in the air when Gary installed the motor, which makes it look much smaller.

For the 460 lovers, why be a conformist when you can pave your own road? It's much more fun that way.

Tim Meyer doesn't play with 335 engines because he likes the way they look.

I hadn't thought about that, but both the cab and the fenders are up 3" in that picture, so it would make the engine look small.

And, by the way if you've not done it, with the radiator support and grill out the fenders go with the cab. In other words, by pulling the 4 cab-mount bolts you can raise everything but the bed by placing 2x4's under the rockers and jacking it up. The balance point is just to the rear of the cab's front edge, so put the jacks about there. You'll need to disconnect the steering column at the sector box by pulling the lock bolt, but the brake lines have enough slack to allow for the 3" lift of two 2x4's between the cab and the mounts.

No, It's cool that Gary is keeping the same engine that came in it.
And, as it isn't intended for a gasoline powered tow rig, I think it's just fine.

But Jon Kaase ISN'T playing when he builds them either!
(there's a reason he's won four Engines Masters competitions )

True. However, I doubt anyone really *needs* a BOSS 429 based engine, on the street. They are impressive though......

It's a Cleveland based engine he won with last time....

His P51 heads will make more power than you could ever use on the street.
No need for the Boss9 that he shorhorned into that Mustang.

351C's had one purpose, 351M/400's had another. You can't quite compare them, even though they're in the same family. The 351M/400 is better compared with the 460, in which it falls flat on it's face every time.

Except in my world.

Eventually I'll have my 460 table.

Nothing wrong with the M/400.
Filled a niche by putting a stout driveline behind a more economical displacement engine.

Exactly. They were meant to tug a boat(large car) around, not get that boat to 60mph in 6 seconds.

The 351M I took out of Dad's truck was used for many a mile towing a large travel trailer. It did the job, but not nearly as well as it could have had they not neutered that engine via cam timing. The way Rusty ran with a decent cam proves that.
