Well, in my efforts to document the fasteners, as well as to pull the myriad of bags holding them together, I realized there are two different lengths of one fasteners. The fasteners are those used to hold these, among other, things together:
  • Fenders to radiator support
  • Corner brackets to fenders and to radiator support
  • Battery hold-down to radiator support
  • Filler panel to radiator support
  • A million other things

It is an M6-1.0 x 28mm job that carries the #N606677-S43B and looks like this:

But, there is a shorter version that is only 21mm long. I have some but can't find a # for them. Do any of you know where they are used? The parts catalog is not much help as it usually says something like "Screw & washer assy.".

However, sometimes the internet helps and if you search for N606677-S43B you find this from
Amazon Amazon
. They want $16.37 for 50 of them in phosphate black:

Cool! Have you ordered from them? I see they have many other things like the u-nuts for those, but the black phosphate doesn't seem to be all that ..... heavy in the pics so I'm wondering how rust-resistant they are.

And, all of this brings up the question of which would look best - phosphate black fasteners or the "Stamped Steel" powder color? The powder would probably be more rust resistant and might look more "factory" for these trucks, but Detroit did use a lot of phosphated fasteners.

Thoughts?

I've only purchased plastic clippy things from them (for holding on door panels, for example) and never bolts. As for rust resistance of the things, no idea; might call or send an e-mail? The pdf file says they're phosphate.

There are other places that sell this stuff, too, go googling around (door panel fasteners) or look in FTE archives for posts by me that have that clipsandfasteners.com site in 'em, I've posted a link to other sites as well.

Thanks. May just carry on PC'ing things. But, I really ought to see what it would cost to buy rather than PC things. However, I'm still interested in what y'all think would look best.

I don't think the stamped steel finish bears much resemblance to the blackened fasteners that come from the factory but they sure look good.

Do what you like.
It is your truck!

I like the zinc/yellow things they started using in the 90s, more modern-looking IMHO.

David - Thanks. I like those but they are a lot of work and chip easier than a good phosphate coating. So taking them off and re-installing multiple times is an issue.

Jim - I don't really have many black phosphated fasteners on my trucks. Maybe some had a light gray phosphate coating but that has long since gone for the most part.

Chris - You mean these? At $10 for 50 they are basically the same price as the black ones you found. Hmmmm

What do you'se guys think of the Zinc & Yellow Dichromate?

Yeah, those! They're pretty common in the Tauri.

They are also very common on the newer trucks. Between those and the little 7mm head self tapping screws almost the entire dash is put together with them, then there are the rear fenders, 17 of those M6 X 1 longer ones per side.

How do they seem to be holding up? (Anything would be better than whatever they did/didn't put on these fasteners.)

Well, the rear fender ones were rusted, but still came apart with a little help from some PB Blaster.

That's not a very strong endorsement. I was hoping for a lot more than that. Guess I'm not sold yet.

You have to remember the exposure, 27 years of mud and water including road salt. They are inside the fiberglass fenders.
