Either way, I feel better with Optilube as its a total fuel system protectant. Plus for $5 dollars shipping, Its cheaper for me to order it than to drive to the diesel shop to get stuff.

I'm looking for a cost effective was to add the lubricity back into my diesel and the summer blend of the optilube is the least expensive and highly rated.

My question is why do they have a summer and winter blend? Do we not buy winter diesel that is designed for winter conditions. Does it add additional protection? Can I just use the summer blend all year and save the money?

From doing way too much reading at the TDI club about additives, I can tell you this. Each blend of additive will work different with different base fuels. Being that winter fuel is blended to flow at a colder temp, the additive needed might be slightly different than one used for summer fuel, as they contain different mixtures of chemicals and fuels.

With that said, I think the Optilube winter blend states that it will lower the pour point and is also a anti-gel, so you are "thinning" out lubrication additive because it has chemicals added to do other thing than the summer blend would.

If you live where it does not get too cold, I would stick with the summer blend. I stay with XPD as its a happy medium of everything.

These Power Service is cheaper comments made me do some math....

Here's my experience with both PS & OptiLube cost:

PS 16oz. = $6.50+.40 tax @ AdvanceAuto.
.4 oz treats 1 gal. = .17 cents per gallon.

OptiLube 128oz. = $51.33+$4.75 SH @ Diesel Fuel Lube
.25 oz treats 1 gal. = .11 cents per gal.
