Hello...new guy here. I have a 1972 F-250 Camper Special, 2WD, 390.
In replacing my power steering gear box, I am also having to replace my rag joint. It looks like on my rag joint, the splines on the part that connects to the gear box I thought looked worn on one side, but I was looking at this picture https://secure435.hostgator.com/~dlv...UZ-3A525-A&s=0 and it looks like that one is "worn" on one side too!
So, I guess my question is, were these splined all the way around, or did they have a section that was not? I'm trying to figure out if I want to rebuild the one I have or get one of those borgeson vibration dampening u-joints. If they were not splined all the way around, mine looks to be in ok shape and rebuildable.
I cannot remember if the collar was splined all the way around. The shaft is, and the collar can slide on at any degree of rotation, best I recall.
The bolt tightens the collar around the shaft, so a little wear on the splines, or a blank spot, shouldn't be much of an issue, as long as the bolt is properly tightened down.
Cool, I went ahead and rebuilt the rag joint last night with a kit from Napa. Gonna put it on tonight and hopefully have a driving truck again! Thanks for the reply.
Ok, yesterday I was working on my 74, and there is an old rag joint laying in the bed. The splines did not go completely around the inner portion of the clamp. I suppose the blank spot is there to allow the clamp to compress around the shaft easier.
When I had the steering gear off, I remember it did not have any king of blank spot, or flat area on the splined shaft (AKA "Blind" spline). The rag joint could be slid on at any degree of rotation.
Granted, this truck is a little newer, but I suspect Ford didn't change the design much between 67 and 79. They are famous for not "fixing" stuff that isn't broken.......
Applications: 1969/74 F100/250 2WD & F350 // 1969/74 Econoline // 1975 F100/250 2WD & F350 all with Manual Steering only.
No Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any, but DORMAN has it.
I was really referring more to the shaft and collar, rather than the entire coupler. I know there were a few changes made as to the size of the pins that stick out towards the top, so the complete unit would be listed by the specific years they fit. I certainly did not intend to imply that the entire coupler unit was the same during the entire 67-79 production run. If they were, I doubt there would be extra parts included with some of the rebuild kits.
