Speedometer problem

I was driving in the city on Saturday and glanced at the speedometer, it was at 80 MPH! When I stopped at the next light it read 30 MPH. I tried turning the key off and restarting but it was still at 30 MPH when stopped. How do I reset it to zero?

You can't reset it to zero, and an offset like that is more than just a sensor failure (which is common). Sounds like your ABS controller (which gathers all the wheel speed sensors) or your gauge cluster is messed up. If you hook up to it with a diagnostic tool like AutoEnginuity, you should be able to see the output from each sensor and the speed your gauge should be displaying, that should help track down the cause of the problem.

Mine has done this twice over the years, and in each case it has corrected itself over a day or two. With each start/stop cycle it gets closer to accurate. I believe it is caused by a fault in the cluster, and I should have got mine replaced under warranty. But every time it did it I was away from home or a dealer, and by the time I got where I could have it looked at, it was back to normal.

My theory is that the next time it does it to me, I will try the gauge test mode described in the thread I have linked below. This test mode starts with a gauge sweep, basically resetting the cluster, and I think it will fix it. If you get a chance to try it, and let me know if it works, I would appreciate the info. Otherwise I have to wait until a cold wet day when it happens again. Maybe never.

It was cold and dark by the time I got home from work each night this week. I finally got to try Bill's suggestion today. I held down the odometer reset button as I turned on the ignition and the gauges zeroed, went to full span and back to zero. The problem is fixed for now. I did about 20 miles with four stops and the speedometer is still reading correctly.
Thanks Bill!
