I have a 1976 f250 with a NP 203 TRANSFER CASE I would like to know if any one can tell me who sells a conversion kit to change this to part time four wheel, Or would it be better to try and find a np 205 case and go from there.
thanks
Is the np 203 the elusive full time 4 wheel ford I've heard about if it is i'd be interested to hear how it works, how can you run 4wd full time on the street without tearing up axels, you would be better off to trade it for a np205. I'd like to build a street truck with full time 4wd but i don't know how to make it reliable.
I only know that this truck has no locking hubs and my shifter is on 4 low lock 4high and 4 high lock. One of the things that I was thinking about was putting warn hubs on the front to disengage the front axle to see if that would work but I am not sure
The NP 203 case has a differential inside it to split the difference in rotational speeds of the front and rear axles. Thats how it can work all the time. It has 2 selections, 4hi and 4 lo, that let the axles turn at different rates, just like an open rear axle. It has 2 positions which are 4hi-lock and 4 low-lock, which lock that center differential, making it like the part time 4wd's for serious play time. As a result of the extra turning mass, etc it makes a real gas hog out of your truck, but hey we dont buy these to commute! You can install part time lockout hubs for the front axle, but theres a catch. If you were to put it in the fulltime position, ie. 4hi or 4low, then all the power will go to the front driveshaft since it has no load on it, unless you lock the hubs. There was a kit that had inserts to loc kthe spider gears inside the xcase, and convert it to part time 4wd, but personally, Id go find a good heavy NP 205 case and use that.
