Truck wont start in park..Any ideas?

I have a 1999 F250 I cannot start it while it is in park. I am not sure if the truck will even go into park. If a park on a slope I have to put on the emergency brake to keep it from rolling away. So in order to start it I have to put it in neutral. I believe it has something to do with the linkage but I'm not sure. I am wondering if anyone knows how to tighten it up or to fix it another way. Thank you!

you def. have a shift linkage adjustment thats wonky..

both of the issues tie in, as in no Park and refusal to start.

X2 on the linkage. Check under the truck on the tranny might be loose or have a adjustment. Could also be your column shifter worn also.

Maybe this will help. I had some transmission work several months back and in this last month, "Stinky" wouldn't start in Park every time. It was once in a great while at first, but got more frequent. One day out of town (at the hotel check-in) - zero, nada, bubkes. Nothing but the sound of distant traffic. The WTS was all good, the engine was warm (3 hours from home), I shifted to Neutral and Park until the shift arm warmed up. Luckily, I still had my dirty work clothes on and there was a freak warm wind, so under the truck I go. I found the electrical connector to the transmission wasn't difficult to remove, and it should have at least required me to unlock it. It was just held on by the friction of the weatherproof seal, but it wasn't latched. I checked to make sure the contacts were clean and I re-installed it, making sure it latched - I really had to press hard. Problem permanently gone.

Does the shifter feel loose and sloppy? If so, that's a common problem. There are two bolts on the underside of the steering column that come loose. They are a Torx 30 head. Look under the column not far from the floor. Add a drop of Locktite to each one and tighten them.
